Nutrition experts

Introduction

Jackpot! You have just been hired to be the sports nutrition experts for you favorite professional sports team. In order to do your job well, you must first learn the physical demands of the sport, types of energy systems the body uses for that sport and what special considerations there are. Since many athletes are different (some are diabetic, have food allergies, may have different preferences, etc.), you are to design a nutritional program for this team that includes off-season, pre-season, in- season and pre-game meal plans. Don't forget to educate your athletes! Good luck!

Task

Your nutrition team will consist of 4 experts. Needs Analysis Team

1. Exercise Physiologist - You are to research about the physical demands of the sport. For example: Is it anerobic, aerobic, both? What energy systems are used? What kind of exercises whould they do? Do all the athletes on the team have the same physical demands/do they vary position to position?

2. Special Needs Nutritionist - You are to research about the special needs of athletes. Examples may be athletes who are diabetic, have food allergies, may be vegetarians, have celiac disease, lactose intolerant, are overweight/underweight etc.

3. Scientific Nutritionist - You need to gather information about athletes caloric requirments, the nutritional information on the foods you will use to feed your team (calories, food labels/carbs, protein, fat, fiber, water, vitamins, minerals...), and special needs of those athletes who need to lose weight/gain weight.

4. Marketing Department/Publicist - You have 3 main jobs to do. First, you are to to design and distribute information brochures to hand out to your athletes. Second, you also will design posterboards to hang up in the cafeteria that contain useful dietary information. Finally, you will design individual nutrition tracking cards (include daily & weekly)for the athletes to keep track of and evaluate their meal choices with the nutrition

Process

GAME PLAN Huddle up with your group and decide on assignments. The roles are: Exercise Physiologist, Special Needs Nutritionist, Scientific Nutritionist, and Marketing Department. Once you get your assignment, go to your individual playbook for further instructions and help. Save all your notes into Microsoft Word documents. Don't forget to save where you got your information from. You will need this for your works cited document. Start your research. Help your teammates research their roles. Remember, this is a group project. If you find something that can help a teammate, do it! The more everybody helps each other, the better the group will do. Research & gather data, research & gather data, research & gather data... Separate the data according to roles. Then, analyze it individually according to your role within the group. Now that each team member has looked at and analyzed their information, share it in a team meeting. Give suggestions and learn from each other. Write out your part of the presentation. Use the help from your individual playbook to get an idea of what needs to be covered. Have another team meeting where all members of your group get organized and ready to present to the class. Be prepared for you presentation. You are encouraged to include visual aids/props, film, posters, etc. When you present to the class, hand in all your research data and individual write ups. This information should be stored on a CD.

Evaluation

Your multimedia presentation and newsletter will be graded with the following rubric. This will be the presentation you will give to the organization demonstrating your knowledge as a sports nutrition team.

Conclusion

Congratulations! You are hired to be the sports nutrition department of your favorite team! You are now responsible for many athletes and will play a big part in their success in their sport. Don't forget to make sure your presentation to the team teaches them about nutrition and gives them confidence in your abilities. If you would like to expand your business you may continue this project (extra credit) by doing the following: 1. CREATE YOUR OWN NUTRITIONAL PROGRAM FOR YOU AND YOUR FAMILY AT HOME. 2. Design a menu with educational information for your athletes 3.
