The Mysterious Life and Death of Edgar Allan Poe

Introduction

Now that you have read a couple of Edgar Allan Poe's stories, it's time to find out about the man behind the words.  Poe's life and death possessed the same despair and mystery as his stories and poems.  His early years were plagued with heartache and sorrow, while his sudden and inexplicable death fittingly left the world with one final Edgar Allan Poe mystery.

Edgar Allan Poe is considered the father of the detective story.  His works have impacted the horror genre in immeasurable ways, including inspiring Alfred Hitchcock's immense list of suspense films (Semtner 2014).  His hometown influence is so profound, there is an NFL team named after one of his poems (the Baltimore Ravens, after the poem, "The Raven"). He is the Godfather of Gothic, the Master of Macabre, and the epitome of possible insanity--with such a repuation, we'd be remiss not to study him...so, without further ado: The man, the myth, the legend...Edgar Allan Poe!

Task

Objective: Working in partners, you will create a google presentation that demonstrates collaboration using technology, use of valid sources, and drawing a conclusion based on evidence.

About this research project:

  • In your partner pairs, you will individually be responsible for answering a set of research questions.
  • You will turn in one presentation as a pair, but will be individually responsible for (and graded on) one slide each in your presentation.
  • You will collaborate on the third slide, presenting your information in a split format, team member# 1 will present their findings/conclusion on one half of the slide, and team member #2 will present their findings/conclusion on the other half. (If you are in a group of 3, you will need to split your slide into 3rds.)
  • While you will be responsible for collaborating and sharing information, your grade will be based on your individual work to ensure that both members of the team "pull their own weight."
