Introduction
A Timeline shows a picture of events as they occurred in a certain period of time. A timeline is a method for picturing or seeing time. Historians take events and place them on a timeline. This shows the chronology of a span of time. By doing this, the relationship between events can be seen. Patterns can emerge that might not be seen without the timeline. Therefore, a timeline is an important source for understanding history.
Integers are used in every day life. Temperatures on a thermometer, above and below sea level distances, tracking yards on a football field, using a checkbook for your finances, and a timeline are just a few examples.
It is important to be able to understand integers, as well as add and subtract them. You will be creating a booklet that uses integers. These integers will also be computed to determine length of time (number of years) in between events.
Task
Your mission is to choose 10 different important dates to you. Five of these dates must be before you were born, and five of the dates must be after your birth. Examples before your birth could be the first man on the moon and after your birth, President Obama's presidency. You will use your birth date to correspond with zero on a number line. The dates after your birth will be positive numbers and before your birth will be negative numbers.
You will create a booklet, using the template on this wequest which includes pictures, drawings or internet clips. Each tic mark on your number line must contain at least three things:
- the acutal year
- the corresponding integer
- Picture, drawing, clipart or video clip
Your final project will include the number line and follow up calculations. See handout.
Process
Steps to complete the task:
Step 1: List 5 events before you were born.
Step 2: List the years those 5 events took place.
(Note: The 5 events must come from 5
different years)
Step 3: Write the integer that corresponds to that event. For example: If you were born in 2005, and if the event was in 1990, the corresponding integer would be -15.
Step 4:
