Music is an important part of our culture that mirrors our society based on geographic location. The variety of instruments, rhythm, and vocals allow for many original works; some inspired by others. In this assignment, you will be introduced to a wide range different genres of music from all around the world. This assignment will also help you explore the ways that music is both shaped by and gives shape to the cultural settings in which it is performed, through studying selected musical traditions from around the world.
Task
Choose 3 countries from the list below and select a song from each of them. For each song, write a 200 word response reflecting on what you heard. Be sure to answer the following questions in your responses: What is the title and author of the song? What instruments did you hear? How did the song make you feel? Were there vocals? If so, what were they portraying? Did you like this piece of music? Why or why not?

Step 1: Select a country.
Step 2: Research music from selected country and choose one song.
Step 3: Listen to and analyze song - take notes on instruments and other details.
Step 4: Write 200 word response to song aswering questions listed in the task.
Step 5: Repeat steps 1-4 with songs from two other countries.
Step 6: Print out word document and turn in by Friday.
Evaluation
You will be evaluated based on accurate descriptions of the music and attention to detail. Be sure to answer all the questions in paragraph form and discuss your thoughts on each piece of music.
Conclusion
After completing this assignment you should have a solid understanding of typical musical styles from various countries. You should also have an understanding of how music is an important part of every culture and shaped by the cultural settings in which it is performed.
