Multiple Sclerosis

Introduction

Growing up my grandma was one of the most inspirational people ini my life. Ever since I remember she was limited to a wheelchair and only had use of her left arm. Still she was one of the happiest people I knew. My freshman year of highschool I watched MS (multiple ssclerosis) take her life. MS affects 400,000 people in the US alone, and 2.5 million people around the world, but to me MS has a face. Please watch this video on what exactly MS does to the human body. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M7O78LvrNSQ

MS can affect many different parts of the body. It can harm anywhere from the brain, to the lungs, all the way down to the joints in your legs and feet. Here is a link to a website that shows how MS affects different parts of the body. http://www.healthline.com/health/multiple-sclerosis/effects-on-the-body

MS can affect anyone, male or female, hoever it is seen in 2 to 3 times as many women than men. Here is a link to many of the questions asked about MS. http://www.nationalmssociety.org/What-is-MS/MS-FAQ-s

Different Types of MS

The first thing to understand is that MS affects every person in a different way. There are no known causes for MS, and it is not directly inherited. While MS is different for every person who has it, there are four main types of MS. The four types are Relapsing-Remitting, Primary-progressive, Secondary-progressive, and Progressive-relapsing. Check out this link to see the differences in these four types. http://www.webmd.com/multiple-sclerosis/guide/how-disease-progresses&nb…;

If you want even more information on the four types of MS, check out this quick video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a-v662cOf1M

Cures for MS

When my grandma first got MS they hardly knew anything about it. There was really nothing that they could do to cure or even slow down the process. Thankfully we have come so far in our understanding of what MS is and how it can be slowed. Unfortunately this is no cure for MS yet. Now we have 16 therapies that are approved to treat and manage MS. MS is also more quickly diagnosed meaning that they can stop thr progression much sooner. Heres a link to some of the ways in which treatments of MS has grown as well as a timeline for major milestones. http://www.nationalmssociety.org/Research/Research-News-Progress

Multiple Sclerosis is a horrible disease that affects everyone differently. It attacks the Central Nervous system, and can leave a person paralyzed. MS affects over 2 million people worldwide, and there is currently no cure. MS also affects many more women then it does men. MS is not directlt passed on or inherited, and we do not yet know what causes MS. Through raising awareness, there have been major breakthroughs over the years.
