Introduction

Welcome to Chapter 11 on the American Civil War! As a class we will look at different events that led up to war, the difference between the North and South, states seceding from the union, and the important battles and people in the War. On the first day students will talk about what they know about the American Civil War to get their minds prepared for the new chapter. The second day of the chapter students will learn about the boundaries and differences bewteen the Northern and Southern States. The third day will consist of looking at what led to the seceding of the union by the southern states and the first actions of the American Civil War.

Task

Day One - What was the American Civil War?
Students will take part in an activity that will get them thinking about what they already know about the American Civil War. They will be asked to think of words that asscoiate witht the War and will put them up on the white board. Then after discussion about each word, students will be broken up into groups. Togetehr with their partners, students will group similar words togetehr and give them a a specific meaning and record why it is important to the American Civil War. Once all groups are finshed, students will share with other groups in a ful class collaboration. The class will end with them watching a video on the time leading up to and the star of the American Civil War
Day Two - Causes and Effects leading up to War
Students will take part in taking notes and observing a powerpoint that highlights the differences between the Northern and Southern States of America. They will also learn about political, social, and economic differences between the two future sides of the war. Students will then be given a worksheet that has them list the ideas and events they just learned about.
Day Three-Seceding and Battles
Students will start the day by recalling what they learned the previous day with a quick memory assignment. They will recall some events and developments that led to to War. They will then take part in an interactive powerpoint and worksheet to help them learn about the southern state seceding form the Union.

Evaluation
Day 1
Evaluation will be on participation in the class and how students work in the groups they are assigned in.
Day 2
Evaluation will be on how students particpate in class and finish their worksheet on information from the powerpoint.
Day 3
Evaluation will be on both the memory activtiy where students recall the things thye learned in the previous lesson and also on the the notes and answered question they take form the powerpoint lesson.
Conclusion
By the end of this unit students will understand,
- Causes that led to the war
- State of the nation before war
- The sequence of the first events of the war
- Important people and battles
