Moving to America: Exploring the 13 colonies

Introduction

“Do I have a piece of property for you!”

Colonial America was a very exciting time in history for the Europeans that were coming to settle in the new colonies.  The three colonial regions included the New England Colonies, the Middle Colonies, and the Southern Colonies.  People settled in these regions because of the different job opportunities, climate and geography.  Your job as a real estate agent working for “Colonial Properties” will be to convince the new settlers to come and live in your neck of the woods. Do you have what it takes to be a top selling agent in Colonial America?  If so, click on the task button below to accept your challenge.

Task

You are a real estate agents working for “Colonial Properties” during Colonial America in the 1600's.  Your task is to close as many deals as possible by selling as much property in your colonial region.  How will you do this?

You need to preview each region and decide which region will make you and your partner the most money.  Remember, your clients are looking for: a pleasant climate, available jobs, a stable government, and a safe place to worship.  Once you have determined which regions will make you the most money you will be creating a Billboard to advertise your selling region back in Europe.

Get on your horse or put on your walking shoes and begin exploring the different colonial regions so you can report back to your prospective clients.

Step 1:  At your table pick a partner

Step 2:  Discuss with your table mates which region each set of partners will be working on.  The resource sheets for the three regions are located below.  You will have 1.5 class periods to complete your resource sheet.

Conclusion

After completing this webquest, students will have learned why the colonists preferred living in certain colonial regions over other ones.   The New England Colonies, the Middle Colonies, and the Southern Colonies all had many positive things to offer the colonists depending upon what type of lifestyle they were searching for.  Colonists chose their preferred colonial region depending upon the available jobs, religion, climate, and government.  By comparing and contrasting the three different colonial regions, students will have gained a better understanding of the positive and negative aspects of each region.
