Mine Craft

Introduction

Welcome Kings, Queens, and knights! You have been selected to create a castle for the lord of the land.  Back in the 1400's many people lived in castles and those were the people that had most of the money in the world.  Many of the castles that are still around today are now museums or are still standing and people can tour them.  But there are some essentials pieces that make a castle what it is.  The lord of the castle wants to have a large wall, drawbridge, catapult, chapel, and a watch tower.  These are the major componants that make up a castle.

In this web quest you will be exploring the great game of Mine Craft.  We have been looking at different structures in our world that help people from day to day.  If you can remember back to class we talked about bridges, buildings, and anything else that has been made by man and is there to help them.

Task

In this webquest, you will have to find a model that interests you and how you can use that in mine craft to recreate that model.  But your not making the same model, you making it better then it is in the real world.  For example, the Golden Gate Bridge is an example of an engineering build that is in California.  The people that built the bridge took many years to plan, figure out how to go about it, and build the bridge to get across the water.

Your tast is to build a castle in the groups that you have been put into.  Each of you will have your own part in the group and have to create an entire castle from the draw bridge to the watch tower.  With your group I would like you to research some different types of castles that there were in the world.  Also, if your group can come up with a unique idea of how to create a castle.  This should be an intereting and fun activity so make sure to all agree on what castle your going to build and most importantly have fun with it!

Mine craft is a game where the player has complete control over what he/she is going to create.  In this interactive activity, I would like for you to use this prgram that is on your computers and create a castle with all 5 componants.  This program lets the player create a virtual castle with your team and make it as creative as possible.  This is the link you should use if you have any further questions about how to use minecraft. If you need help dont hesitate to ask me.

Process

Step 1: Come together with your group and collaborate to see who is going to do what project in the castle building process.

Step 2: Go onto mine craft and find out what tools you will need to build your pieces of the castle. Then, make a list of the material you will be using to create the item.

Step 3: Come to me and show me the list of materials that you have come up with.

Step 4: Make a blueprint with your group on what your castle is going to look like!

Step 5: You will then start to create the piece of the castle that you are going to build.

Step 6: After your piece has been completed you will then come together with your group and share the parts of the castle with each other and move them into place to make your full fledge castle of the lord of the land!

From this list of different castles, please look at what different parts their are to the castle and if there are any differences in each of them.  After looking at all of them as a group, choose ONE castle that interests your group the most and assign the different roles to each group members.  The roles include:

1: Draw Bridge

2: Watch Tower

3: Wall and Perimeter of Castle

4: Catapult

5: The Chapel

Here are the link to the websites that I would like you to look at for examples of castles for each different part of the castle:

Drawbridge Use these links:

You have been selected to be the builder of the drawbridge for this Castle! You are going to need to do a little research on this part before attempting to construct your own.  Look at where the best place for a drawbridge to go for a castle would be and how large it should be (should be to scale to the rest of the castle). Once you have looked at different drawbridges, you have permission to start the building process.  Remember, the research you do before hand should be imporved apon when making your new drawbridge.

Quesitons to answer:

1: What is the biggest different between the two types of drawbridges given for references?

2: What should I include in the drawbridge to make sure that it will go up and down?

Watch Tower:

You have a very important role in the castle building process.  You are to make a watch tower that is going to protect all of the people that live inside the walls of the castle.  From the sources provided use the research to help get the base line for what a watch tower should look like.  Take into consideration the size that it should be compared to the rest of the castle.  Also, your research should be woven in throughout the mine craft creation that you have used.

Questions to answer:

1: From the references that are provided, what is the most important piece?

2: What are some differences in both of the watch towers that I should pick between?

Wall and Perimeter of the Castle:

As the wall and perimeter of the castle builder, your job is to make sure that the people inside the castle are going to be safe while living inside.  Start by using some of the research sources provided to get an idea of what types of pieces should be included in this wall.  Work with the other people in your group to figure out how long and tall the wall should be to make it look correct with the rest of the castle.  This job is one of the most cruicial to the whole castle.  Make sure that the outcome of your final product is a better representation of the wall that you researched.

Questions to answer:

1: What type of wall am I going to use for our castle?

2: What types of things am I going to make sure I use to make it unique?

Catapult:

With this job you are going to be working on making sure that the catapult can throw different object outside of the castle at your enemies! Taking into consideration the research compoinants that are provided make sure that the catapult is elaborated on.  Make sure to use both of the sources that are here to get the best looking catapult that can fit the castle your group is planning on building.  The research will help you determain what should go with this catapult your making.

Questions to answer:

1: What is going to be the hardest part of building the catapult and why?

2: What is the most imporant part of the catapult?

The Chapel:

This is a piece of the castle that gives it character and where a lot of different gatherings are held.  There are many ways to go about how you want the inside of the chapel to look, but use the reference to help you in your desision.  This will only garentee that the chapel that you are constructing will have componants that are similar to what it should have looked like.  Also, making sure to put your own spin on the creation so it is 100% unique!

2: http://www.cindyvallar.com/scot3.html

Questions to answer:

1: Looking at the resources, what pieces should I include in the chapel?

2: What is the major part of the chapel?

After you and your group has desided on how your going to construct each part of the castle you can go ahead and draw a blueprint of what your castle will look like.  Each person will have their own drawing of what they want their piece to look like.  Once you have brought it to me to check, your now ready to build your medieval castle!

Evaluation

This is the rubric you will be graded on so follow this to help guide you in making the castle a great one!!!

CCSS:  W.5.7: Conduct short research projects that use serveral sources to build knowledge through investigation of different aspects of a topic

Big Ideas:

  • How will you be able to construct a castle with all of the constraints on them while building?
  • Being able to collaborate with each other as well as working by themselves to comeplete a project.
  • Students will also learn how to gather multiple resources and get information from that to construct their castle
