Migration to Australia

Introduction

As a class we have heard first hand stories from immigrants, of how they migrated to Australia, any struggles they endured and their overall contribution to the Australian economy. The development of Australia as a nation will be explored from the perspectives of immigrants from Asia and Italy. This task will allow you to learn about the way of life of people who migrated to Australia and their contributions to Australia's economic and social development.  

It is important to understand that immigrants have played a crucial role in the development of Australia. 

Task

Within this webquest you will be completing a number of different activities. Each activity will allow you to develop a deeper understanding about the effect that migration has had on Australia's society and economy. 

These activities will include:

  • A powerpoint presentation 
  • A Report

These activities can be completed in any order, they must be finished at the end of 2 lessons.

Process

Activity 1: 

- Students will conduct research into the Snowy Mountain Scheme.

- They will need to make a powerpoint presentation in relation to the Snowy Mountain Scheme.  Answering the following questions.

-Where were most migrants from? Why did they migrate to Australia?

- What have migrants contributed to Australia? 

-When did the project start/end?-What is the Snowy Mountain Scheme?

-What impact did the workers on the Snowy Mountains Scheme have on Australia? 

-Any Interesting facts 

Activity 2:

-Students will conduct research into the Gold Rush

- Students will write a report in regards to the Gold Rush. 

-Should include any hardships that are facing the migrants during this time. 

-How it transformed the Australian economy.

-Where it was in Australia?

-Where migrants travelled from? Where the majority of migrants were from?

-Any Interesting facts

Extension Activity:

- Students can look at migration from the perspective of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders and write a diary entry. 

Evaluation

Sharing and evaluating

In small groups students will share their new findings with their peers. Students will also present their powerpoints to a small group of students. Students will give each other feedback. This discussion time will allow students to clarify key concepts and also allows students to share the information they discovered.

Students may ask questions such as:

  • What area did you find most interesting during the webquest and why?
  • Is there a particular area which you would like to dicscover more about why/why not?
  • What was an interesting fact you learnt whilst completing the webquest?
  • Has your attitude towards Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander's and migrants changed after learning more information about their experiences?

Conclusion

Whole Class Activity 

Students will be seated as a class in front of the interactive white board. On the board there will be a blank slide with the heading Australian migrants. Students will be asked one at a time to share something they have learnt about the topic. Students should have at least one answer for each. 

*The teacher can use this time to write down anecdotal notes and also use the information to guide future programming for the students*
