Mars

Introduction

Distance from Sun

Earth is 92.96 million miles away from the Sun, and Mars is 141.6 million miles away.

Diameter

Earth's diameter is 7,917.5 miles, and Mars's diameter is 4,212 miles.

Tilt of Axis

Earth has an axial tilt of about 23.4 degrees. Mars is slightly tilted more. It's axial tilt is about 25 degrees. This resullts in Mars having seasons.

Length of the Year

Year on Mars is about twice as many days as Earth. One Mars year would be 687 Earth days.

Gravity

Gravity on Earth about 2 1/2 times Mars. This could result in muscle loss if humans were to live on Mars. Humans would need to wear special equipment to weigh them down.

Temperature

Avgerage on Earth is 57 Mars is -81 Fahrenheight. Earth's polar ice caps have reached a record -128.6 degrees Fahrenheight. Humans would need special suits and bases to comfortably inhabit Mars.

Atmosphere

Earth's atmosphere is composed mostly of nitrogen, oxyegen, argon, and others. Mars's is mostly composed of carbon dioxide, alongside water vapor. This would result in the need for some sort of filtration device in order for humans to inhabit Earth.

Composition of Mars

Dust covers most of the surface of Mars. The crust beneath Mars's surface has beeen mostly dormant and is about 900-1,200 miles thick. Mars is too cold for flowing water, but theres evidence that suggests it once did.

Task

Mars exploration

Dec. 4, 1996 - NASA launches Mars lander and rover named Pathfinder. Lands July 4, 1997. Communicates with Earth Sept. 27, 1997

Jan. 3, 1999 - NASA launches Mars Polar Lander/Deep Space 2. Lost on arrival December 1999.

June 10, 2003 - NASA launches Mars Exploration Rover Spirit. Landed on Jan. 4, 2004. Searched for water activity. Lost communicated in March 2010. Declared dead in May 2011

July 7, 2003 - NASA launches Mars Rover Opportunity. Landed on Jan. 25, 2004 in the Meridiani Planum region. Traveled over 20 miles and is searching the Endeavour crater.

Aug. 4, 2007 - NASA launches Phoenix Mars Lander. Landed May 25, 2008. Dug into soil to find ice under the surface. Communication lost November 2008. Declared dead May 2010.

Nov. 26, 2011 - NASA launched Mars Science Laboratory. Plans to discover if Mars was ever hospitable to life. Landed Aug. 2012.
