Introduction:

Irmo Middle School has been home to the yellow jackets for years. Have you ever wondered why? Would you change it to a different animal if you had a choice?

Now is your opportunity.....you and your group will get to research an animal and write a letter to the principal on why our school mascot should change to your group decided mascot. Are you ready to take on the challenge?

Process

In groups you will need to follow the following steps.

Step 1. Each member in the group right down 3 animals they would like as a mascot. (Think Globally as we are an International Magnet School)

Step 2. After each member has written down 3, share your mascots and pick the animals that was said the most. You will need to narrow down your list to only ONE mascot.

Step 3: Research your proposed mascot. Answer the following questions.

                            a. Where does is live (habitat)?

                            b. What does it eat (diet)?

                            c. How long does it live (lifespan)?

                            d. How does it help the environment?

                            e. Is it on the verge of becoming extinct?

Step 4: You and another group will join together and share your proposed Mascot and the information you have learned.

Step 5: After each group joined, open a google document and share it with kcunning@lexrich5.org. Answer the following questions:

                            1. What mascot did your group present to the other group?

                            2. What mascot did you learn about from another group and provide one detail you learned.

                            3. Which mascot would you choose based off of what you learned today?

Step 6: Write a letter as a group to your principal to see if he would change the mascot to the mascot your group has chosen. Include information that you researched and you think Mr. Jackson would like to know about.

Step 7: Create a poster of your mascot to present to the class. Make your poster colorful and pretty!!!!

Evaluation

You will be graded on yourt participation with your group. The teachers will help you write your letter to Mr. Jackson.

Your poster needs to be colorful and pleasing so others will vote for your mascot.

Conclusion

Time to vote:

What mascot would you choose and why?
