Making Life Simple

Introduction

Hello boys and girls! Welcome to my workshop! Today we are going to be looking through my tools to decide what we should bring to our service project. First, let me tell you that many of the tools in my workshop will make our jobs a lot easier at the site. Let's watch this video to learn about simple machines that we can use to get the job done faster and easier.

Task

You and a partner are going to become experts on simple machines in order to figure out which tools are best to take to the construction site later. Answer the questions below and they should lead us to a decision about what tools we need. After becoming an expert on simple machines and deciding what tools to take to the site, you and your partner will design a new simple machine that you think the guys at the construction site need to make their job easier.

1. What is a simple machine?

2. What are the 6 types of simple machines?

3. Name an example of each type of simple machine.

4. How do simple machines make work easier?

5. Which tools should we take from my workshop to the site?

6. Create your own simple machine. You will name your tool, draw a sketch of it, and then decide how/when people will use your machine. Then you will build a 3-D model of your simple machine.

You will be graded on your research, the model's relation to simple machines, creativity, and the durability of your invented simple machine.

Process

Students can use these sites for research about simple machines, along with the video from the introduction:

Building A Structure : Simple Machines

    Student Name:     ________________________________________
CATEGORY 4 3 2 1
Research Outstanding research; all answers to questions were correct Sufficient research; some answers could have been better  Mostly good research; half of the answers to the questions could have been improved Poor research; none of the answers to the questions were correct
Relative information The invented simple machine satisfactorily relates to other simple machines The invented simple machine relates to simple machines The invented machine barely relates to simple machines The invented machine does not relate to simple machines at all.
Creativity Invented simple machine is very creative Invented simple machine is creative Invented simple machine is not very creative Invented simple machine is actually an existing simple machine with a different name
Function Structure functions extraordinarily well, holding up under typical stresses. Structure functions well, holding up under typical stresses. Structure functions pretty well, but deteriorates under typical stresses. Fatal flaws in function with complete failure under typical stresses.

Conclusion

Great work boys and girls! Your simple machine designs are awesome; perhaps they will be used by people one day! Also thank you for helping me decide which tools we should bring to the service project this afternoon. Your suggestions are going to make working hard in the sun a lot easier!
