Magnets and Magnetism

Introduction

HIGH SCHOOL PHYSICS ONLINE INVESTIGATIONS

A WebQuest, according to Bernie Dodge, the originator of the WebQuest concept from San Diego State University,  "is an inquiry-oriented activity in which most or all of the information used by learners is drawn from the Web. WebQuests are designed to use learners' time well, to focus on using information rather than on looking for it, and to support learners' thinking at the levels of analysis, synthesis, and evaluation."

The PhysicsQuests adapt the main guidelines of a WebQuest.

PhysicsQuests can be used:
-  as extension activities to tie a particular Physics topic to a common
experience such as electricity, roller coasters,
- as tutorials to reinforce concepts learned in the classroom or
- as an exploration of topics that are not generally covered in class.

Task

We all know about refrigerator magnets.  But do you know what happens when a magnet breaks?  How animals use magnetism?  Learn more about magnetism and why it is so important.

Go on a fact finding mission to learn more about magnets.  Use the links provided to visit some websites to find the answers to questions about magnets and magnetism.  Read carefully and write your answers in your own words.  Complete the worksheet given in class, and hand it in on the due date.
