The Lorax

Introduction

The Lorax

By Dr. Seuss

The Lorax by Dr.Seuss tells the story of how one person's greed and wastefulness force all the animals to leave a beaufitul land. It also discusses the destruction of that land. The Lorax sends a message at the end. Think about this message and how it connects to Earth Day.

Task

You will work in groups of 4 to study The Lorax by Dr. Seuss and discover how the actions of humans impact the earth. It will take you one week to complete this webquest. You will complete tasks 1-5 with your group. Task 6 will be independent. You will conduct research, read texts, and compare The Lorax by Dr. Seuss to The Lorax movie. You will gain an understanding of how your actions can impact the earth in both positive and negative ways.

Process

Task 1:

Before beginning, Mrs. D will read The Lorax to the class. The first time you hear it, you will just listen. You will then read it a second time as a group. During this reading, please note any new or interesting vocabulary. You will complete the sheet as a group but each person will need to have their own individual copy.

Task 2:

With your group, you will now analyze the characters. Think about traits they possess, their actions, and clues the author gives you about their thinking. Read the story again with your group. While reading, complete the Character Chart. Each group member will need their own.

Task 3:

With your group, you will now think about the structure of the story. Read the story again with your group. While reading, complete the story map. Each group member will need their own.

Task 4:

What message is the author trying to send? What was his purpose in writing this story? Complete the graphic organizer.

Task 5:

Now you have read a story about how pollution can change the Earth. Using the websites below, you will research real life pollution and its affect on the environment. You will also learn about ways other kids are helping to clean up our planet. When you finish your research you must create a presentation that shows what you have learned. You may choose your presentation method. Some options include a poster, Power Point, Prezi, or Glogster.

Please see the Mrs. D for a grading rubric.
