Introduction
We have been taking about the Great Outdoors for a few classes now. We also went on a field trip in the Outdoors together last week.
It is now time for you to prepare your own adventure. Using this webquest, you will go through the steps to prepare a camping trip. In groups, you will be working to plan a route, grab equipment/tools, plan meals, and choose an outdoor pursuit.
Task
The task of this assignment will be for you to work in group of four on planning a camping trip. Using the resources provided, your group will need to plan a route, equipment/tools, and meal plan within a set budget.
For this WebQuest, your group will be taking on the role of a group of four friends who has just graduated from Ecole secondaire St-Anselme and that wants to go on a weekend camping trip together.
Each person in the group is contributing $250, making the total $1000 with which to purchase supplies and cover your expenses. Your group will be leaving on Friday afternoon and returning on Sunday afternoon. To reach your destination, you will be driving.
Before getting into the specifics of planning your trip it would be wise for your group to look at these sources to get an idea of the equipment/tools and other basic camping information you will need. Some of the online resources you will find useful are http://www.campshop.net, http://www.beginnercamping.com.
You can also surf the net on your own to find relevant information on camping.
You will need to create and hand in, on the due date, a spreadsheet document that clearly and accurately displays ALL the required information (itinerary, information on the camping, meal plan, budget, outdoor pursuit)
Then, individually, you will be required to answer the following question: (approx. 100 words)
In your opinion, what are the positive advantages of taking part in outdoor pursuits that could transfer over into your everyday life?
Process
After reading over the basic camping information, your group will need to decide where it is you want to go. You can go anywhere in any camping of the province of Quebec, but remember you only have one weekend. One of your fellow camper's parents are letting them borrow their 2008 Toyota 4Runner for the trip.
1. You will need to figure out how far away your destination is by using www.google.ca/maps and how long it will take to get there.
2. Next you will need to figure out how much gas is going to cost for the trip by checking out the fuel economy of the 2008 Toyota 4Runner at www.auto123.com and the cost of gas at www.quebecgasprices.com
3. Now your group needs to find out how much it is going to cost to stay at your destination by looking at camping fees, and site fees. To check out the different campings available, you can check these addresses:
https://www.sepaq.com/pq/index.dot?language_id=1
https://www.campingquebec.com/en/
The information that you collect here should be placed in a spreadsheet document of your design. **Remember that any money spent here is subtracted from your budget total**
4. The next portion of your group WebQuest will be to decide what equipment/tools you are going to bring on the trip. A requirement for this section is that your group must purchase a tent, a sleeping bag for each person, a first aid kit, and something to start a fire.
a. Use the knowledge and information form the sources provided to help you select your gear. It may be a good idea to brainstorm ideas and write down a potential list before selecting and purchasing your items.
b. Once you have decided on what equipment/tools you are going to bring begin shopping around. Use these websites to find your gear:
http://www.colemancanada.ca/Home,
http://www.sail.ca/en/?___store=east_english&___from_store=east_french
c. Generate an inventory log of the equipment/tools that you have purchased.
The information that you collect here should be placed in your spreadsheet document. **Remember that any money spent here is subtracted from your budget total**
5. Where would a good camping trip be without a decent meal plan. Your group will be required to purchase enough food to feed each member 5 meals. Before your planning gets too specific your group should check out the Canada food guide at
http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/fn-an/alt_formats/hpfb-dgpsa/pdf/food-guide-aliment/view_eatwell_vue_bienmang-eng.pdf to be sure that your meals meet these standards.
a. Use the information provided in the sources to guide your decisions in selecting your food supplies.
b. Begin brainstorming potential items and writing them down in a list.
c. Finalize your decisions and start using these sites to purchase your supplies
http://www.superc.ca/en/circulaire.html#resultat
d. Create a menu displaying all the meals for the weekend.
The information that you collect here should be placed in your spreadsheet document. **Remember that any money spent here is subtracted from your budget total**
6.You are moving along quite nicely. The next section of your WebQuest will be to:
a. select ONE outdoor pursuit (ex: Mountain Biking, Fishing, Rafting, canoeing, kayaking, mountain climbing, hiking, etc)
b. Use the resources provided to research the activity or research the net on your own.
