The Life of Milton Hershey

Introduction

To prepare for our field trip to The Hershey Story we will be exploring the life of Milton Hershey. On your own you will be required to research the life of Milton Hershey and the experiences that lead up to him becoming a great leader. With your group, which will be assigned, you will be creating and illustrating a timeline of these events!

This will better prepare you for our trip to The Hershey Story by learning background information on Milton Hershey and what makes a great leader.

Task

Your groups assignments is to create and illustrate a timeline of the major events in Milton Hershey's life. Your timeline should show events that happened specifically to Milton Hershey AND/OR events that happened in the world during the same time. In order to create your timeline you must complete the following tasks!

Task 1:

On your own you must research the life of Milton Hershey. You need to find out what was Milton like as a child and how was his life growing up? You should research his birography and look specifically for important events, which should have dates/times.

Identfiy when and where he was born
Identify important information about Milton Hershey growing up

Task 2:

On your own research hsitorical and world events that happened between the dates that Milton Hershey lived. These events DO NOT have to be about Milton Hershey, but about what was going on in the world during those time periods.

Research historical events in the world during Milton Hershey's life
Idenfity how these events could have effected or have to do with Milton Hershey or his life experiences
Identify important world events and dates

Task 3:

Research hardships or difficulties Milton Hershey experienced in his life. What were they? How do you think this effected or altered him as a person? Don't forget DATES!!

Learning Expectations:

Idenfity events in Hershey Milton's life that were difficult or that he had to overcome to achieve his dream
Research the dates and placed these events took place
Discuss how these events made Milton Hershey's life more challenging and how he overcame these obstacles

Task 4:

Lastly, you must research Milton Hershey's legacy. What contribution did Milton Hershey create to the world? Did he acheive his dream, if so how? How is Milton Hershey still around today?

Research what contributions Milton Hershey achieved in his life time
Identify how he is still around today
Discuss how these events made him a better leader and what qualities he needed to have to achieve these

Step 1:

On your own go to the following websites to research the biography of Milton Hershey. You should read through and begin to take notes on important dates and events in his life. You should consider his birth place, parents, birthday, education and anything else you believe to be important.

Step 2:

It is also relevent to look into historical world events that were going on during the time Milton Hershey lived. It is only required that you only find 2-3 historical/important world events during that time. Think about why these events might have contributed or been a factor in some of the situations and events Milton Hershet experienced.

Step 3:

Hardships and obstacles allow people to grow and deal with situations that are not easy or simple. Follow these links and search for obstalces Milton Hershey faced during his life time. How did he overcome them? How did they change him as a person? Did they effect his life in certain ways? These are all questions to consider when looking for these hardships/obstalces.

Step 4:

Milton Hershey had many dreams, it is your job to research these dreams and how he made them a reality. What legacy did Milton Hershey leave behind? What do we still have today that is a result of Milton Hershey's dreams and accomplishments? What leadership qualities did he possess in order to achieve these accomplishments?

Evaluation

Students, you will be evaluated on your completion of your research and your timeline that you will put together with your group.

Conclusion

After your research has been completed you will then work together with your group to create a timeline. It is up to you how this timeline will be created. You may use your own creative brain to decide how you want to illustrate your timeline or you may use one of the template ideas I have provided below.

I will provide you with color paper and crayons to help get your creative ideas flowing! It might be helpful to think about some of the chocolate creations Milton Hershey created that could be some inspiration for a timeline idea!
