Webquest is an inquiry-oriented online tool for learning. It is a classroom based lesson in which most or all if the information that students explore and evaluate comes from the World Wide Web.

In 1995, Bernie Dodge at San Diego State University created Webquest with early input from SDSU/Pacific Bell Fellow Tom March, the Educational Technology staff at San Diego Unified School District, and waves of participants each summer at the Teach the Teachers Consortiuim at The Thacher School in Ojai, California. Dodge's aim was to give his student teachers a format for online lessons that would make the best use of the student time while fostering higher -level thinking skills. Since then, webquest has development over the years and is now utilized by staff developers at schools and teacher educators at universities as a source of training materials ad ideas fro their own courses. As the usage of webquest grew, links were created to webquest all over the English -Speaking world.

Furthermore, webquest consist of 6 essential components such as Introduction, Task, Process, Resources, Evaluation and Conclusion. The Introduction like it says introduces the topic and provides background information and overview of learning goals to students. The task is a formal description of what the students will have to do. The Process is a description of the steps learners should go through in accomplishing the task. The resources are a list of resources students will need to use to complete the task(bookmarker websites etc.) The evaluation is a rubic used for evaluating students work. The Conclusion allows for reflection by the students and summation by the teacher.

In addition, several topics lend to Webquest such as " What should be done to protect America's coarl reefs?", " What was it like to live during the American Gold Rush", and What kinds of people were most likely to survive the sinking of the Titanic? Why?". The best use of the Webquest format is for topics that are less well-defined tasks.

In order to create a webquest, you would need a web editor, which is similar to word processor. You need a web server to post your webquest, but you can the webquestion on a drive(storage device) for each student. Next you would need Internet access to your computer and students computer.

Furthermore, there are a few critical perspectives when useing webquest. First, the biggest challenge is time, finding time to design a webquest when it requires you to learn some new tools and some teachers cannot find the spare time to pull it off. Second, webquest requires students to have a certain level of reading ability, unless one is careful to find highly visual sites or an adult present who is willing to read the screens to the student. Hence, webquest may only be used for students who can use and not those in 2th or 3rd grade. Lastly, there are persons who feel as if classroom learning should be focused on facts and content and consider webquest to be "fluff" since it emphasize critical-thinking skills rather than particular information.

Lastly, webquest can be utilized in conjunction with other eductaional techniques. Webquest promotes cooperative and collaborative learning, since students work in groups. It also helps students meet standards focused on critical thinking and analysis skills which is especially useful in social studies and science classes.
