Introduction

Have you ever wondered what makes a plant grow? Or why cacti and succulents will survive without water for a long time, but other flowers need to be watered every day?

In this lesson you will learn about how all plants sustain life!

Task

Task

By the end of this WebQuest, your group will have created your own story about a plant's life cycle! Are you ready to get started? The next page will show you how...

Choosing Roles and Meeting Online

Groups will be chosen by random drawing of numbers out of a hat on May 2nd.

There are three roles required for this project: Nutritionist, Survivalist, and Reproductive

As a group, you will decide who takes each role before the first group meeting on May 3rd.

Groups will meet on Google Hangouts on May 3rd at 10am.

Invite me to the Google Hangout so I can check in on you and provide any help, as needed.

Roles

Nutritionist

What nutrients does a plant needs to survive?

How can you test your ideas about what nutrients plants need to survive?

Do all plants need the same nutrients to survive?

What are the primary nutrients needed?

What are the secondary nutrients needed?

What happens when a plant is deficient in Nitrogen; Phosphorus; Potassium?

Use the following links to find your answers:

Survivalist

What types of environments can plants survive in? Jungle; Mountains; Snow; Desert; marsh/swamp; forest?

How do plants in each of these environments survive?

What are some examples of plants suited to each environment? (i.e., cactus in the desert, evergreens in snow, etc)

Use the following links to find your answers:

Reproductive

How many stages are there in a plant’s life cycle?

What are the stages of a plant’s life?

How do flowering plants reproduce themselves?

Sharing Information

Complete the first two columns of your KWL chart for your the other roles.
Each group member will take turns sharing about their role.

While someone is sharing, take notes in the Learned column of your KWL chart.

Ask and answer questions to ensure that everyone is an expert in all the roles.

Prior to your research, you will complete the first two columns of your KWL chart for your specific role.

Each person will use the links below the questions to research information relating to your role.

As you research your roles, you will fill in your L section of the KWL chart.

Planning for Final Product

As a team, you will need to prepare a story about the lifecycle of a plant in an environment of your choice.

Requirements

  1. Choose an environment for your plant to survive in (i.e. desert, mountains, coastal, jungle, forest, snow)
  2. Choose a plant to discuss.

  3. Talk about the nutritional needs of the plant and how the environment supplies these needs.

  4. Discuss how the plant will survive in this environment, including any special adaptations that helps this plant survive.

  5. Discuss how this plant reproduces in this environment, including any special adaptations that help this plant reproduce in their environment.

Brainstorming

  1. Start brainstorming with a theme or genre you would like for your plant story.

  2. Knowing you are making a story with the characters going through the plant cycle, brainstorm about what you want the story to be by establishing the:
  • Beginning,
  • middle,
  • end.

This can be done on a Word document. It’s something simple just to get your ideas in order.

3. Use the elements of a story to plan telling your story and what you will include in your plant video

Creating Final Product

  1. Create a Google Doc for your group.

  2. Write your story based on the brainstorming you did above.

  3. Double check you met all the requirements above

  4. Proof read

  5. Edit as needed

  6. Publish your story by…. [Month Day Year]!

Nutrition

Articulates what a plant needs to survive. Evaluates whether a plant could survive based on the meeting of specific needs. Identifies the basic requirements that all plants need to survive, and can apply this knowledge to different examples.

Reproduction

Articulates the stages of a plant's life/flowering cycle.
Evaluates whether plants enter these stages at different points under different conditions. Describes how flowering plants are able to reproduce.

Survival

Gives examples of plants in all types of environments.

Identifies which environmental factors affect plant growth and how. Articulates how plants adapt to survive in their environment.
