Introduction
Hi Kindergarten Class! It's your first time visiting a zoo! Up until now, the only animal you've seen up close is grandma's cat Gato. Now, you're at the San Diego zoo with your best friend, and you are on a scavenger hunt to see the most animal families as possible from as many different places as possible.
Task
You have a short amount of time to introduce yourself to as many animals as possible. Can you figure out which animals belong to these four classifications? Can you find out where animals live?
Find at least two animals from these classes:
-Mammals
-Birds
-Reptiles
-Anphibians
Find one animal from each of these different places:
-Asia
-Africa
-Northern Frontier
-Australia
Process
Together as a class, visit zoo.sandeigozoo.org on the Smart Board and take suggestions from the students on which animals to click on. One by one, read the classification and location of each animal you click on. Ask volunteers if they can read one sentence from the information page. See if the animals fit a criteria on your scavenger hunt.
Tell the students have fifteen minutes to find all the animals needed on their list.
Evaluation
After the students check off all the animal classifications and locations on their list, reward them with a video of one of the animals (they can choose via class vote).
Students should be engaged, interactive, asking relative questions, and answering thoughtfully.
Conclusion
The students have now gotten an introduction to their zoo animal unit. They should be able to identify a mammal, a reptile, a bird, and an anphibian, and have an idea of where a few animals habitats are.
