Introduction
Before we begin, let me remind you what is a community and who is a community helper.
Community
A community is the region in which people, plant or animals live and interact under similar environmental conditions. It can also be a group of people that have similar interests.
Community Helpers
A community helper is a person who helps the other members of the community by providing some form of service. He or she works to make the lives of other community members better.
Now go to your packet and list down 3 examples of community helpers that you can think of (page 1 of packet)
Task
Today you will be exploring goods and services, along with community helpers. Let's first consider what a good and a service is.
A good is an object that people want that they can hold or touch.
Examples: Food, Dog Bones, Toothbrush, and Pencils
A service is an action that a perosn does for someone else.
Examples: Firefighters put out fires for other people, Police arrest bad people to keep good people safe, and soldiers fight and defend our freedom for us.
You have listed three community helpers jobs on page 1 of your packet. Now try your best at determining whether these jobs provide a good or a service. Write this on page 1 of your packet beside the job name on the lines.
Now pick a community helper that you are wondering about from this list and flip to page 2 of your packet. Write the job that you picked on the line that says job title. The list is: Blacksmith, Butcher, Construction Worker, Dental Assistant, Farmers, Firefighters, Garbage Men, Librarians, National Guard, Police Officer, Teachers, or Veterinarians.

Blacksmith
Their job is to help make objects out of iron or steel. They can create objects such as gates and rails. In the Army, they create weapons for the soldiers that are deployed because shipping the items would take to long.
Butchers
Their job is to cut up meat such as pig and cow. They help provide food for our community. Have you ever seen Collins Meat Market?
Construction Workers
Their job is to help build buildings and houses around a community. They helped to build this school.
Dental Assistant
Their job is to help clean teeth and take X-rays so the dentist is ready to see the patient. They will also help in filling cavities.
Farmers
They help harvest crops and provide food for our community. They use equipment such as tractors to help them with their job.
Firefighters
Their job is to help put out fires in our community and help with car wrecks. They help keep people safe.
Garbage Men
Their job is to go around the community and help pick up trash. This is to help to prevent a bunch of trash being at someone's house. Ask you someone about what night their trash goes on?
Librarians
Their job is to help someone when they are looking for certain books. They also check out books for people. Have you visited our local library before?
National Guard
Their job is to help out in natural disasters like hurricanes and tornados. They also help defend our freedom.
Police Officer
Their job is to help keep all the bad people and bad things from harming us. They will arrest people who are trying to harm people like you and me.
Teachers
Their job is to help teach children. They help provide you with information that you will need as you go through school.
Veterinarians
Their job is to care for sick animals. They help keep the animals healthy in our community.
