Introduction
As many persons may know, the environment in which a particular child is raised in can determine the language development of that child as well as many other vital factors such as ones cognitive and psychological development.
Upon entering a learning institution for the first time, parents may realize that there are various types of languages in which the child may become exposed to based on the fact that each child is from a different cultural background and social class. In the first few years of a child's life it is seen where language acquisition takes place at home where the child is exposed to the mother tongue or the native language in which the parent/s speak. As the child enters school, he/she is exposed to the language popularly used to facilitate learning within the classroom. Althought this is so, it seen where some children have managed to retain the first language which they have been exposed to.

As it relates to the cognitive developemt of a child it is seen where language is acquired through the socialization where students in interact with their peers within the class.This process of socialization allows for students to incooperate new information with prior knowledge to present new knowledge which enhances learning in the classroom. Language being acquired in the classroom can be viewed as being both negative and positive. Postive in the sense that students who are exposed to the different languages are more likely to effectively socialize with his/her peers as well as develop a positive rapport with students as they attain the feeling of self confidence within the classroom. As it relates to the negative aspect of acquiring different languages within the class, it is seen where there are languages that parent/s deem as undesirable in the sense that parents view the use of some languages as unexpectable. This is seen in the Jamaican context where Jamaican ceole is viewed as language used by those who from the lower class in society. Due to this fact, parent/s may not want their child or children to exposed to that langauge as they see this tongue as being unacceptable to their teachings and moral practices. Althought these assumption made are not necessarily true, it seen where a vast amount of person are of that opinion. In conclusion, language acquisition is seen as a topical issue for discussion as well as informational as it relates to learning within the class.
