Introduction
Introductory Activity
The teacher will have students watch a lyrical video, giving detail information on nouns. The teacher will instruct students to listen and watch the video and pay keen attention, because the information will be used to define the part of speech and categorize nouns according to what they name. This information will be essential throughout the lesson.
Task
Students should be able
- Accurately define nouns after watching introductory video on nouns by the end of the lesson.
- During lesson create a word map with a noun on a chart provided.
- Complete a word sort/word wall of three things nouns name
- In pairs using information from the word map write at least five sentences on the given word, by the end of the class.
Process
Process- Developmental Activities
Step 1:
After watching the introductory video at least two students will be asked to give their own definition of what a noun is. Their response will be written on the board for all to see and adjusted if necessary.
Step 2:
The teacher will mount a chart of an incomplete word map with the noun newspaper on the board. The student will use the information acquired from the video and their classmates’ definition on nouns to complete the chart. The chart will have the noun newspaper. In order to complete the chart they will need to tell what a newspaper is, give examples of the word; such as gleaner, observer and star, describing the word; by telling what it consist of, what it looks like and how they can source it and also giving their definition of the word. The chart will remain in class for future reference.
Step 3:
Teacher will engage students in a word sort/ word wall where they will use the information garnered from the introduction of the lesson to categorize nouns, whether they are people, places or things. The teacher will distribute 14 strips of paper among the students consisting of common and proper nouns that name people, places and things. On the board she will draw a grid with heading proper and common nouns. In each slot there will be a category for people places and things. Puzzle will be developed on the board for all to see. The students will be expected to place under the slot people a common noun for example boy and proper noun for example Bryan.
Evaluation
Culminating Activitiy
In groups of three or four, students will use the word from the word map and create at least five sentences. Students have two minutes to prepare and one minute where sentences will be shared.
