To Kill a Mockingbird: Summary and Analysis

Introduction

 Hey everyone, 

Once you have finished the novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, you will complete a one-page summary. You will need to include and discuss the main points, themes and symbols that we have gone over in class. At the end, you will analyze a character's development throughout the novel. Throughout this assignment think in terms of how you might be explaining the novel to your parents or friends who have never read it. This assignment will rely on your ability to remember in chronological order and think critically.

Task

Your task will to have accurately described and explained the summary, themes, symbols, and character development in To Kill a Mockingbird to someone who has never read it. Assume that every aspect of the novel has to be discussed in order for your audience to really understand it.

Process

1. Think back on the novel as a whole.

2. Summarize chronologically.

3. Look back in notes or recall the themes we have discussed in class.

4. Find where in your summary do they appear. 

5. Add them into your summary and explain how they are working and how Harper Lee uses these themes.

6. Repeat steps 3, 4 and 5 for symbols that we talked about in the novel.

7. Pick your favorite character.

8. Make a chronological diagram of how their actions and approaches to situations.

9. Think of how those actions change over time.

10. Discuss the characters development. How have they grown as a character?
