Introduction

Everyone thinks, they know the innerworkings of Jurassic Park, solely based off the fact that they have "seen the movie". I am sorry to burst your bubble, but this just simply is not the case. Jurassic Park, written by Michael Crichton, is a jaw-dropping, drama filled, science-fiction novel. The characters are completely different, the events that take place are more graphic, the development of chaos and the explanations of the process are so much more than what they make them out to be in the movie.
Yes, do not worry; the novel still has dinosaurs, kids.
When we first enter onto the scene, an unknown species of lizards begins attacking children in Costa Rica. A sample of the lizard's carcass is sent to a lab at Columbia University. There a lab technician, believing it is a dinosaur, speaks to the renowned paleontologist, Dr. Alan Grant. When Dr. Grant receives a fax of the lizard's skeleton, he is surprised to find that the lizard is actually a dinosaur.
What will happen next?

Task
TASK 1- THE CHARACTERS

With this link, http://www.sparknotes.com/lit/jurassicpark/characters.html, complete the character worksheet by following the directions on it.
When you are finished, you will tape/paste the character worksheet by page into your Interactive Notebook.
TASK 2- POINT OF VIEW
Answer the questions in your Interactive Notebook
- Step 1: Read this excerpt from Jurassic Park (Begin on pg. 3 with the Prologue and read through page 4): http://www.ompersonal.com.ar/OMFIRST/JurassicPark-MichaelCrichton.pdf
- Step 2: Answer this question: Which point of view (POV) do you think Jurassic Park is told? Give specifics (i.e. evidence from what you read that makes you believe it was written in this POV).
- Step3: Read this article:http://www.bookrags.com/studyguide-jurassic-park/styles.html#gsc.tab=0
- Step 4: Answer this question: Which POV does the article state Jurassic Park is told? Give specifics.
TASK 3- MOVIE OR BOOK?

Read these three reviews, and then, answer the questions below.
1. https://litreactor.com/columns/book-vs-film-jurassic-park
2. http://www.examiner.com/article/michael-crichton-s-jurassic-park-vs-steven-spielberg-s-jurassic-park
4. http://www.avclub.com/article/jurassic-park-spielberg-made-family-favorite-adult-219492
What is your opinion? From these articles that you have just analyzed, do you believe that the book or the movie will be better? Use at least one of the articles to defend your point of view.
Use MLA in-text citation format. For example, if I quoted from Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton that, "The sky was growing darker. Thunder rumbled in the distance" (Crichton 168), was the use of foreshadowing, I would put the author's last name, then the page number in parentheses and then insert the proper punctuation mark after I closed the citation with the last pathentheses.
TASK 4- Contrasting the Novel to the Movie
Watch this 10 minute video clip, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6HB9ONXhCyw. While you are watching, write down 10 pieces of contrasting evidence in regards to the novel vs. the movie, Jurassic Park. Also include 10 pieces of similarities with the book and movie. Make sure to write these contrasts in your Interactive Notebook.
TASK 5- CONTENT WORDS
DEFINE and DICTATE
All should be on your worksheet and then put into your Interactive Notebook

1. DEFINE THE FOLLOWING CONTENT VOCABULARY:
- Genetic engineering
- Biotechnology
- Structure of DNA
- Molecular genetics
- Gene splicing
- Chaos theory
- Fractal curve
- Taxonomy
- Butterfly Effect
- Prehistoric
- Paleontology/Paleontologist
- Paleobotany
- Genetic testing
- Genetic code
- Bioengineering
- Jurassic
2. Dictate to a partner using context clues in your sentence for the above terms. Your partner must write these sentences down on your paper. Partner must do the same for you, but using different context clues in a different sentence.
3. Find the content vocabulary word in the book, and write down the sentence.http://www.ompersonal.com.ar/OMFIRST/JurassicPark-MichaelCrichton.pdf
TASK 6 - CHAOS THEORY and HOW IT CAN BE USED TODAY

Read ONE of the following articles:
- http://www.scienceclarified.com/Ca-Ch/Chaos-Theory.html
- http://imaginefreedom.org/2013/05/18/chaos-theory-ending-human-trafficking/
Then, summarize how the author of the article used chaos theory to explain the topic. In your conclusion sentence, explain your opinion on the matter. Use evidence from the articles. Cite using MLA format for in-text citation.
TASK 7- How Jurassic Park came to be
Analyze the following article, http://electricliterature.com/revisiting-jurassic-parks-tangled-bookish-roots/. Write a one paragraph summary on how Jurassic Park was created, its purpose, and some of its reasons that you can think of as to why we never get a POV from the dinosaurs. They have feelings too :(
TASK 8- THE DINOSAURS
There are plenty of dinosaurs that we will encounter while reading this novel, 15 to be exact. Use your dinosaur scavenger hunt worksheet to match the dinosaurs to their names and label their features on their bodies. Here are some websites that can help you complete this FINAL task :) Use your book for the list of dinos we will encounter http://www.ompersonal.com.ar/OMFIRST/JurassicPark-MichaelCrichton.pdf PGS 68-69
