Mexico: Ancient Aztecs

The early Aztec people were a tribe of wandering hunters, known as the Mexica, who lived in the northern region of present-day Mexico. In the 12th century, these warlike people moved south to the Valley of Mexico. According to legend, their chief god, Huitzilopochtli, told them to look for a special sign-an eagle perched on a cactus- and settle in location they found it. Around 1325, the tribe found the sign on a marshy island in Lake Texcoco. They settled and made a new village called Tenochtitlan, that grew into a large, important city.

The Aztecs created a large and powerful empire that lasted until 1519...nearly two centuries! Although the Aztecs took many of their ideas about religion, agriculture and the calendar from earlier people in Mesoamerica, they developed their own unique culture. In 1519 the Aztecs first encountered Hernan Cortez and his small army of Spaniards, who eventually defeated them in 1521. After his first encounters with the Aztecs, Hernan Cortez had much to learn before deciding how he was going to interact with them.  Medieval Europe: Role of Women in Middle Ages

Women in the Middle Ages, a period of European history from around the 5th century to the 15th century, held a difficult position in society whether they were nobles (rich) or peasants (poor) . Women were totally dominated/controlled by the male members of their family. They were expected to constantly obey not only their father, but also their brothers and any other male members of the family. They held active roles in society, although their efforts were affected by their social class, martial status and by the place and time in which they lived.

Marital Status:

What will you do? This activity will involve you researching and taking on the part of one of the characters in a medieval town during the late 1300s. After researching the plague and its effects, your group will develop a plan to keep your town and families safe from the Black Death.

The local doctor,
Or the peasant farmer living outside the town walls.

Next, You will do research to find out what this death is, how it is spreading, and how to deal with its effects. You will research, research and research some more.

By finding out what works, and also what does not work, you will find what kind of things should be done, and some that should NOT be done. What were the results The Plague left in its wake?

Finally, Then you will prepare an emergency response plan for your town.  Upon completing your plan, you will present it to the King/ Queen who will either approve of your plan, and grant you a huge princely sum, or he will NOT choose it and place you in prison until the Black Death catches up with you!

Task #1: Choose a role to play and then make up a name for your character.

Task #2: Research to answer the following questions for your role only (Use lined paper to copy the questions for your role down and answer underneath):

Priest: What kinds of actions did the Church take? What did the church believe about the plague? What was it a result of? How might it be stopped? What effects did it have on the Church and on people's faith?

Doctor: What kinds of medical treatments were used? What is the Plague and how does it spread? How did it spread around medieval Europe?( The last two questions, research common understandings of the time and also include what we know about the plague and how it was spread now?

Peasant farmer: What effects did plague have on rural populations? What areas of Europe were hardest hit? What were the least affected areas? You will need to include a map outlining your findings.

Task 3: Write an Emergency Response Plan for your town. Your plan can include the following documents: signs and emergency broadcast warnings, laws both civil and religious, procedures for dealing with the victims, both treatment and burial, and any other item you decide is in the best interest of your town.
