It's a spotty kind of day!

Introduction

This presentation aims to provide you with the knowledge and skills to be able to recognise, and discuss with peers and families about hand foot and mouth and chicken pox, in our Long Day Care facility. It will include Educators discussing and expanding their knowledge on:

* The symptoms

*Treatment

* How it spreads and

* The risk it poses on adults

Developing this knowledge will be achieved through the completion of this web quest presentation and activities.

Task

The room will be split into four groups of three.

2 groups of three will work on hand; foot and moth while the other two groups of three will work on chicken pox.

In your group you will be asked to answer the question: What do you know about hand, foot and mouth or Chicken pox?

During this task you will write your prior knowledge down on a piece of paper

You will be given 15 minutes to complete this task

After writing your knowledge down you will share with the whole group some facts you know about the communicable disease.

Process

In your group of three designate a writer, drawer and speaker.

Once these roles have been delegated work together to create a poster you would display in the Long Day Care Facility aiming it at parents/ families.

You are to include the symptoms, how it spreads, how it is treated, how it can effect adults and any other relevant information you as a group feel is necessary.

The poster is to be completed on an A3 piece of paper and will be hung around the Long Day Care Facility.

Below is a short video clip on the disease and some relevant websites to ensure your prior knowledge is correct and up-to-date.

Also refer to the 5th ed Staying Healthy, preventing infectious diseases in early childhood education and care services (2012) as they guide our long day care facility with probation periods and other relevant information.

Evaluation

To evaluate the poster the person who has been delegated the 'speaker' position will read out and justify what they have included on their poster and share any new / or interesting facts they have found out about the disease.

Conclusion

Educators must be aware of or at least have resources to assist them when dealing with communicable diseases within Early Childhood settings as they can spread quickly throughout the centre and the community causing many undesirable illnesses. The National Health and Medical Research Council (2012) provide effective exclusion, hygiene and monitoring procedures to implement within the early childhood setting and is a required document to comply with the National Quality Standard (National Quality Standards, 2013).

I hope you found todays web quest project effective in growing your knowledge on the two selected communicable diseases.
