Introduction to Organic Chemistry

Introduction

Carbon is special.

So special that it has an entire branch of chemistry dedicated to it, Organic Chemistry.

In this Web Quest, you will learn about organic chemistry and things made from organic chemistry

Task

For the introduction, each person will answer questions on google forms based on some links

These forms are an introduction to Organic Chemistry

Then working in groups of one or two, you will make a presentation on an assigned organic molecule.

Process

Introduction Sites and forms.

Answer the questions on the three google forms, based on these sites.

Introduction

Hydrocarbons

Biochemistry

After the three forms have been submitted and checked, you and your partner will be given a compound to study. You will make a presentation with the following information

  • The chemical formula of your compound
  • At least one diagram of the compound with the elements shown
  • The organic group that your compound belongs to (Alkanes, Alkenes, Aromatic Hydrocarbons, Alkynes, Alcohols, Halogen directive, Alkyl, etc....)
  • When and how was your compound developed or discovered?
  • Develop a list of the major chemical properties of this element. (examples - melting point, density, compounds it forms.....)
  • Describe the major reactions that your compound undergoes - give the name of the reaction as well as the reactants and products. Tell how this reaction is used in real life applications.
  • Describe some of the common uses for your compound and/or the products of the compound.
  • Investigate the effects of the compound on the environment. What benefits does it provide? What harmful affects does it have? How does it get into the environment?
  • Investigate the effects of the compound on the human body. What benefits does it provide? What harmful affects does it have? How does it get into the body? What can you do if you consume/breath/aborb it into your body?
  • Overall, why would it be important for people to understand the key facts about your compound?

Evaluation

Your evaluation will be based on the following:
