How to be a Good Citizen

Introduction

Imagine you are taking a walk with your brother or sister and they have an empty water bottle they need to throw out but there is no garbage can in sight. What do should they do, throw the water bottle on the ground so they don't have to carry it or hold on to it until they find a recycling bin?

What if you were home and your dad was doing dishes, would you help him or just watch him as he did a chore?

You and your friend are playing on the playground and you see one of your classmates not playing wiht anyone, should you ask her to play? 

Everyday we can find ways to be good citizens and help those around us. Let's learn some ways we can do this!

Task

Why is it important to be a good citizen?

What are some thigns good citizens do?

Students will learn to identify ways in which they are good citizens and how to find new ways at home and at school to be good citizens. 

Process

Students will read as a class the book "Being a Good Citizen: A Book about Citizenship" and discuss in small groups how the character is being a good citizen. 

Students will then do a picture sort to identify things that make somebody a good citizen or a citizen who needs to be more responsible.

Students will brainstorm, on their own and then with peers about a time when they were good citizens. Students will write a story (5-6 sentences) and draw a picture telling about the time they were a good citizen. This story will be shared with the class. 

Evaluation

Students will complete weekly good citizen reports in which they must identify a time both at school and at home in which they did something that made them a good citizen. 

Conclusion

By learning how and when we can be good citizens we are helping those around us. It is important to be respectful and responsible and to help others. We can also be good citizens by helping our community and the area around us. 

Being a good citizen means being respectful and responsible to people, the community, our neighborhood, and the area around us. It is important to be a good citizen.
