Help the Yekers Count Money

Introduction

Boyo and Noyo Yeker did not listen to their parents and traveled to Earth from their planet Yekton. Now they are stuck on planet Earth and cannot return to Yekton until they have enough money to buy a spaceship ticket. They need your help! They must be able to find exactly $0.87 to pay for a spaceship ticket home.

Task

CCSS.Math.Content.2.MD.C.8
Solve word problems involving dollar bills, quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies, using $ and ¢ symbols appropriately. Example: If you have 2 dimes and 3 pennies, how many cents do you have?

Students will be able to count coins to determine the correct amount of money.

 

Process

2. Next, click HERE to watch this video about counting money. Pay close attention the Yekers are counting on you!

3. Take coins out of the container that your teacher gave you. Count $0.46 using 4 coins and take it to your teacher.

4. You are really getting good at counting money! Now,click HERE to watch this video and help the racecar count the money.

5. The next thing you need to do in order to help the Yekers is play a game to practice counting money. It costs $0.74 to play. Find $0.74 in your containor of money that your teacher gave you. She will give you a golden ticket and a secret envelope if you are correct. DO NOT open the envelope!

6. Congratulations you have earned the ticket to play the game! Click HERE to put your skills to the test and play a game!

7. Time to open the secret envelope. Remember the Yekers need $0.87 to buy a spaceship ticket to mars. Inside your envelope are 8 wallets. Count the money in each wallet. Write the amount of money that is in the wallet on the front of the wallet.

8. Put your name on the envelope and put all the wallets back in the envelope EXCEPT for the one that has exactly $0.87.

9. Give your teacher your envelope and the wallet that has $0.87 in it. If you give your teacher the correct envelope she will have a special message from the Yekers for helping them return home!
