health fads

Introduction

                Health fads               Details
The Graperfuit Diet

is also known as "The Hollywood Diet"

This diet is not generally a long term diet, more of a short term.

Has been in the United States since at least the 1930's

this diet is based on a claim that grapefruit has a fat burning enzyme (protiens)

it is proven that just by ading 1 tablespoon of grapfruit juice with every meal can help in asssisting weight loss

Marathons

Marathons have recently been very popular/bought back to life.

the first marathon was ran at Athens, Greece in 490 B.C.

A long marathon is a long distance of 42.195km and is usually run on a road

Marathons are on all around the world

if you are wishing to participate in a marathon trainers recomend weeks of training and dieting to prepare you body for the long distance

Activating your Almonds

this fad is part of the "Paleo Diet"

soaking your seeds, pods, nuts, grains ect. breaks down phytates( a cyclic  acid)

soaking your nuts will release more nutrients in your everyday diet

soaking your nuts can also soften them and can naturally sweeten them without any sweeteners/sugars

if you are healthy or are on a healthy, balanced diet there is  really no need to soak your nuts

 Meatless Mondays

not eating meat for one day can make you turn to other foods, such as superfoods

a day without meat can gradually lower your cholesterol

this health fad is good for living a healthy life, and is good for weight loss

can lower the risk or preventable diseases/conditions like cancer, cardiovascular disease, dementia, diabetes, and obesity

Juicing

high concentrates of vitamins

juicing your fruits brings out more nutrients, than eating it

freshly squeezed juice develops bacteria quickly, so you should only juice the amount that you are going to drink, otherwise it will lose all of the nutrients

keeping some of the pulp can keep that fibre in your drink

if you dont enjoy fruits or vegetables, juicing is an alternate route to get your daily amount of nutrients, protein and fibre

Task

TASK 2

HEALTH FADS:

Juicing      Activating your Almonds       The Grapefruit Diet

Juicing is promoted/marketed on ads such as the nutri bullet ad and on TV health and food segments.

Activating your almonds is advertised in some health segments of your local newpapers, magazines ect.

The grapefruit diet was/is promoted in a selected range of health and fitness magazines and is sometimes mentioned in the newpapers

An example of an advertisement for 1 of 3 health fads:

JUICING

I think that the promotion/adervitsing is successful because they have the advertisments that are showing the health benefits of doing these fads/diets.

I think that these advertisments/promotions would be unsuccessful because these diets/fads aren't really spoken about/ heard about these days.

Out of these 3 health fads i would be most likely to try the juicing diet because I enjoy my fruit and vegies, having them all blended up just brings out more nutrients from the fruits.

Out of these 3 health fads I would be least likely to try the grapefruit diet due to the fact that I am not a huge fan of grapefruit/juice.

The down effects of juicing is that juicing is "detoxifying" enzymes that are breaking down the liver, so can cause liver problems/difficulty. If you continue this diet for a long period of time, this is when these problems may occur.

The down effects of doing the grapefruit diet is that it can cause blood clots which can be very harmful to the body if left untreated. A blood clot is caused when blood stays in one spot and doesnt circulate throughout the particular area.

the down effects of activating your almonds is that if you are already healthy and fit and are on a balanced diet, there is no reason to activate your almonds, so you are really consuming unnessecary sugar/sweetness.

Evaluation

Dr Phil Report.

From watching this episode of Dr. Phil I learnt that just because other people are doing it doesn't mean that we should nessecarily do it. The types of fads included in this episode is tanning and the phentamine pill.

The tanning fad can be very harmful to your body. Tanning can cause skin cancer, aka malenomas. If these malenomas are left untreated, it can cause something called a basal cell carcinoma, which is where the malenoma spreads to the surrounding area. If any forms of skin cancer are left untreated, it can cause serious illness, or even death.

The types of people attracted to tanning are generally young women aged between 25 and 40, just because they want to be attractive. Some women are doing it to be attractive, however, most of the participants do not know what they are doing to their own body, slowly killing themselves. The problem is, women are getting addicted to it, so some of the people know what its doing to their body, however, they are still doing it.

The phentermine fad is making headlines for all the wrong reasons. Phentermine is used to help the participant lose weight. Yes it is making them fit for a short period of time, however there are many side effects that are life long. Some side effects of the drug are are: mixed emotions, can make you nautious, can lead to heart problems/difficulties, depression and insomnia.

People take this drug so that they can become attractive, active, fit and healthy. Yes it may do for some period of time, however, doctors tell their patients that the drug should only be used maximum of 3 months. Phentermine has not had a single medical test done on it, so therefore no one knows anything about it, apart from the fact that it is a weight loss pill. Phentermine can be addicting. This might be because it is a synthetic amphetamine. So therefore it is classified as a drug.

Both of these fads are making headlines for all the wrong reasons. They can either cause serious illness or may even cause death. They both have exceptional results on the outside, sadly not on the inside. If you are using/doing either one of these you should stop right away because you are slowly killing yourself.

Conclusion

Credits

During this term studying health fads, I learnt that not everything that people say that are good for you. I also learnt that some things might be discusting, it could potentially be extremely good for your health. For example, Meatless Monday. Just going without meat for one day can lower your cholesterol, can lower the risk of dementia, diabetes, obesity, cancer and cardiovascular disease.

Some companies persuade people to try a variety of health fads in various different ways, some of which are: by doung ads on TV, such as the Nutribullet, where they get volunteres who have used the Nutribullet for juicing that have lost weight or more. Another example is the waist training fad, where they show ads of how it has changed their lives by making them look 10kg smaller. This makes the viewer interested in the topic, which then makes them want to try it.

A fad that I designed that I would potentially try, would be having a cup of kale a day. Kale is high in fibre and has 0 fat. One cup of kale is equivalent to 36 calories, 5 grams of fibre and 0 grams of fat. You would have a cup of kale for 8 weeks (2 months), and then go back to a normal diet for 2 weeks. If you are not a fan of kale, you can add other nutritious food if needed, otherwise it is best to consume this by itself. While on the fad, still try to have a balanced diet.
