Health Fads |
Details |
| Meatless Monday | Where people went a whole day off meat, it was supposed to make people turn to super foods. |
| Weight loss suppliments. | Suppliments sold every where claiming that you would lose weight by taking them. The pills will help you, but as soon as you get off them, you gain weight. |
| Oxygen Shots | Inhalable Oxygen is what Simon Cowel uses, it apparently makes you look younger, and glow. Scientists Say that it isn't safe in large quantities, out bodies need as much oxygen as they need, but too much can cause cell damage |
| Heated Classrooms | Supposed to make you feel like your working harder, and make you feel more accomplishment. However after studies they found that heated classrooms actually made people work less because they couldn't concentrate, and some people suffered symptons including; Queasiness, Headaches and feeling Nauseous |
| Diet Coke | In 1982 Coca-Cola released the "Diet Coke" with "No sugar" making it a healthy choice. However, instead of sugar, they used artificial sweeteners which were twice as bad! This lead to mis-conception, and people gaining weight just like normal. After 30 years of the release, Diet Coke is now recognised as the best Diet Soda ever. |
Task
| Meatless Monday |
http://www.jamieoliver.com/meat-free-monday/ This Health fad is promoted by Jamie Oliver, this is huge. I would think him promoting this would make this fad even more popular and successful because Jamie is a well respected man and quite famous over TV, and youtube. I don't think this would be very unsuccessful until people realise that it's all a big commotion so that people turn to super foods that companies are selling mass amounts. This could shatter Jamie's respect from others, and reputation. However, I doubt this would happend because Jamie's cooking is too good to resist. |
| Diet Coke |
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nge9E9Risak Diet Coke was a big one for the world because it had "no sugar what so ever." Now this was really successful because people who were addicted to coke and gaining weight wanted to enjoy the pleasure of Coke, but not gain weight. So this promotion of a new Coke led to a massive mis-conception. It was successful also because kids rarely got coke because of it's high sugar content, but parents would be more inclined to buy it for their child because of the "no sugar." The only thing that would make this unsuccessful is when thise who get too suspicious realise that the artificial sweeteners in the coke that are used instead of sugar are worse for you're body than the original Coke, and people wonder why they are still gaining weight, even to this day. |
| Oxygen shots |
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/tvandradio/x-factor/9087940/Simon-Co… Simon Cowell promotes these, I think this would make it very successful, Simon Cowell is very well known and respected because of all of the amazing artists he has made big. People also think that because he looks 38'ish when he is 52 that the oxygen shots actually work. The thing that makes this unsuccessful is the fact that scientists have said that too much pure oxygen, can lead to cellular damage, which can lead to cell walls being broken down making you vunerable to diseases. At the sound of that a lot of people would back off of the idea. |
| Which one would I most likely try? |
If I didn't know of the dangers of the Diet Coke I would probably try that one. I love Coke, and the fact that they have brought out a new one without any sugar, I can drink as much as I want without gaining weight and become sick with decaying teeth |
| Which one would I most likely not try? | The one I would definitely not try would be the oxygen shots. The fact that it can break down your cell walls after too much making you vunerable is too much of a risk to me and is a very-ver big put off. Also, it's around $20 for 4 litres. The average Human consumes around 7-8 litres of oxygen a day. That's a lot of money for something you can get for free. That's $40 worth of pure oxygen if you were to breath it all day. Exspensive. |
Process
| Health Fad | The Health Fad was "Sun-Eating" Where people (mainly women) would go completely off water and food and look directly at the sun with maybe paper or an umbrella as some protection against their retnas at sunrise, and again at sunset, instead of eating food and drinking water. |
| Victims Gender/Name/Age | The lady who suffered a fatal incident's name was never revealed, there was apparently no records in her house, and she had no family or friends. She was aged in her fifties and was female. |
| Duration of Health Fad | She started the health fad in 2010, but it was soon over in 2012. |
| Reason for going on Health Fad | The reason for her going on this Health fad is because she saw a documentary film named "In the Beginning, There was Light." In the film it starred a man who supposedly claimed he had gone 70 years without food and water, and survived on the rays of the sunlight in the morning and night. She was quick to follow along with the mans claim. |
| Symptons | There wasn't as many symptons, mainly hunger, dizziness, headaches, most of the symptons you would gain from not eating and drinking. However it was fatal two years later after she started. |
| Did the Health fad achieve what it claimed in any way? | Definitely not, the Health Fad claimed that you could go up to 70 years without food and water on the sun rays, but... she only lived for 2 years off water and food. So in no way did the Health Fad deliver anything it promised to do. It was also believed that going on this diet saved energy from digesting which could be transformed into spiritual energy. |
| Details of other similar cases. |
In 1999 before the death of the swiss women ^^, Australian-born Verity Linn aged 49, was found dead on the floor in the Scottish Highlands after attempting this fad for 21 days. I was unable to find any other cases. I assume this is because the health fad did not kick off as much as others, considering how stupid it sounded and how quick experts were to act on this saying it was all fake. Also, after 2 deaths, it would be quite clear not to try it. |
| Health Fad | Tobacco. People Smoke Tobacco to relax the brain, and get rid of the stress from the body. |
| Victims Gender/Age/Name | Louis Armstrong. A male aged 74 at death. Died from Heart Attack due to smoking.![]() |
| Duration of Health Fad | 1921, when Louis was in his early 20's |
| Reason for going on Health Fad | As a black musician, hate was common, and Louis needed a way of relaxing and escaping from it all, so he resolved to the health fad of "Tobacco." To calm his nevers and let him sit back an laugh at all of those people who hate him. Also, in 1930, he was arrested for possesion of Marijuana, after going to court the judge gave him and his friends Six months and a $1000 find each. |
| Symptoms |
The symptoms of smoking tobacco are: Headaches Nausea Constipation Fatigue/Drowsiness Anxiety Depressed Mood |
| Did the Health Fad achieve what it claimed in any way? | The Health Fad advertisments claimed that smoking Tobacco would lead to relaxation, and a layed back life. Now one part of it was true for a short period of time. When you smoked it, for a short time after you would feel layed back, and relaxed, however later you would feel the dreadful symptons that are listed above, making life a living hell, and like they want you to do, make you go back and get more to feel the relaxed feeling again. More money down the drain. Then it leads to cancer, and then death. |
| Details of other similar cases |
King George VI died of lung cancer Walt Disney Lung cancer King Edward VIII Throat Cancer Frank Sinatra Heart Attack and Dimensia Winston Churchill Stroke from smoking |
| Health Fad | Tounge Piercing |
| Victime Gender/Name/Age | Israeli Male aged 22 name unknown. Died in Hospital after getting his tounge pierced the previous week |
| Duration of Health Fad | Early October 2009 |
| Reason for Going on Health Fad | The man went on the Health Fad and got his tounge pierced because it's supposed to make you look younger and cooler. |
| Symptoms |
Numbness Loss of control of tounge if nerver or blood vessels have been damaged or broken Swelling of tounge blocking airway Prolonged bleeding Organ failure and severe septic shock |
| Did the Health Fad achieve what it claimed in any way? | Not at all, a lot of people who have tounge piercings are looked down uppon for the position of it. The piercing certainly didn't make you look younger or look cooler what so ever. It did the complete opposite. |
| Details of other similar cases | I was not able to find any other cases for the chances of you dying from a tounge piercing are quite rare. However, symptons are unfortunately not as rare. |
Evaluation
| Type of Health Fad in TV Show |
Sun bed tanning: people would lie down inside of booths and the booths would project UV rays onto their body tanning them. This was dangerous because the over exposure from the UV lights making the chances of cancer higher. |
| People that normally are involved. |
Teenagers, people with skin that can't tan in the sun and very untanned people. At least 80% of them without fail do it because they are unhappy and insecure about their body colour and simply want to have darker skin. They also do it because they feel that they are more accepted by people when their skin is brown and tanned instead of pale and white. |
| Side effects |
Some of the side effects that can occur from tanning in a booth include the following: The tanning bed becomes like a drug to the user and they have to use it or they feel anxious, depressed and feel like they are helpless without it. Addiction isn't a pretty thing. Using tanning beds also effects the eyes, giving the user a higher chance of getting ocular melanoma in their eyes. Tumars, and cataracts can also occur. Pre-mature aging is another side effect because the over-exposure of UV rays creates wrinkling in the human skin and ages the persons body quicker. Which kind of defeats the purpose of the tanning bed considering it's supposed to make you look younger. The tannig bed also creates the higher risk of skin cancer because the over-exposure of UV rays is too fast for the protecting cells to repair the body damage |
| Interesting facts |
There are some very interesting facts about tanning beds/booths and here are a few There are more tanning bed parlours in New York alone, then there are McDonalds. 32% of tanning bed users are under the age of 21 Just in the US, 419,254 cases of cancer have been from tanning beds, over 6,000 of these were melanoma Women who use tanning beds more than once a month are 55% more likely to develop melanoma In 2010, the indoor tanning industry’s revenue in the U.S. was estimated to be $2.6 billion In the U.S, tanning beds emit 4 times the UVA radiation and 2 times the UVB radiation of the midday summer sun in Washington, DC. High-speed sunlamps emit a UVA dose 6 times, and high-pressure sunlamps 12 times, that of the Washington, DC, summer sun |
| Type of Health Fad shown in Show | Phentermine, a diet pill that is used for weight loss, however it contains traces of ecstacy making it extremely addictive. and unhealthy |
|
People that normally are involved |
Over weight people that can't find the motivation to eat helthy, and work out, so they use the cheap cheat and use the pills |
| Side effects |
Some of the side effects of taking phentermine: Anxiety Depression Dizziness Nausea You become moody and mean Unaware of surroundings and those around you. |
| Interesting Facts |
Some interesting facts I found out about phentermine include: If you are pregenant using the pills can damage the baby or even potantially kill it with in the next couple days. If breast-feeding, phentermine can flow through the milk making it dangerous and potentially fatal to the baby. If you are allergic to asprin or yellow food dye phentermine can be quite dangerous to you and your health. Having a kidney disease and taking phentermine is a really bad idea. If you have kidney diseases or a history of them, it can bring the diease back and/or make it completely worse for you. |

| What have I learnt? | I have learnt a lot from reading an watching videos, I've learnt of the dangers of following health fads that other people try, and that just because half a million other people are doing it doesn't mean that it is a good idea and the outcome of doing so will be fantastic and promising. I have learnt about the effects and what phentermine even is. I learnt about how viciously dangerous tanning beds/booths are. That plenty and plenty of stupid celebrities have died from health fads because they wanted publicity and wealth. I also learnt about the effects from trying on of these health fads and after this term I will definitely be more aware of "Fads" and will be certain to not join in on any of them without sussing everything out and looking at the proven facts that determin wether or not the Health Fad is safe, or wether it's going to kill me! This term also changed my perspective about how gullable people can be in the world and that majority is a big thing for millions of others. It's proven that if mayb 2-3 celebrities try a health fad and advertise it, then millions and millions are sure to follow their foot steps and try everything out, with out even checking if it's safe for them and others surrounding! It has been a massive switch turn on for me and it's awesome that I now have the knowledge to make sure that others don't make the mistake of thinking it's a good idea. |
| How do companies get people to try health fads | Companies usually use celebrity and fame as their advertisement. They'll pay a famous celebritie to go onto the Health Fad and then blog it so that thousands of other sites post about it. This gets the word out and millions of other people try out the Health fad like I stated before. For example, there's a celebrity that eats cotton balls as part of her diet, it's supposed to fill her up without her gaining weight so she gets thinner. This bursted over all news sites and diet sites making it public. Just like the company wanted. Now everyone is trying it out because if a famous person is doing it, why shouldn't I? |
| Design a better strategy for Good Health outcomes that would work over the long term. | If I was to design a Health Fad it would be one where you have a good filling breakfast at the start of the day, and for lunch and dinner you have vegetable or fruit juices. This way, you are getting the healthy and good start to your day, but then "fasting" for the rest of the day on juices to lose weight. The only side effects to this is stomach pain and possibly dizziness for the first couple of days whilst you detox, after that however you will be fine and good to continue this Health Fad. |
