Get ready to learn skills to help you shop out in the real World!
Task
Your grandparents need you to go to the grocery store to get a few things to make cookies. They give you a bag with $15 in it (some bills, mostly coins). You have two lists, one list for each store you go to.
You will have a partner and the two of you will take turns being the customer while the other one is the cashier. As the customer you will need to add up the cost of the items as you go, to make sure you have enough money for the items. Then when you get to the cashier you will have to give the cashier the right amount or enough to cover what you owe. As the Cashier you will need to calculate the amount of all the items and count the customers money to make sure they have gave you enough. Then you will have to determine if or how much money you need to give the customer back as their change.
Whoever is the customer first will be the cashier first then you go to the second store.
Process
This WebQuest is meant to take a couple of days to complete. First you will review the U.S. coins and how much they are worth. You will review how to add and subtract with bills and coins.

2. Use your Market List to find the items you need to buy at Wally's Market. Write the prices next to each item in the blanks.
3. Add the prices together to find the total cost of the items and write the total price in the blank next to the word TOTAL. (Do not let your partner see this number!)
4. Now you are going to record that total in the chart beside the word AMOUNT TOTAL.
5. Subtract the TOTAL from the AMOUNT PAID to find out how much change you should get back from the cashier. (Do not let your partner see the amount of change. You are doing this to check their math later!)
6. Now look at the AMOUNT PAID and using your bills and coins count out the money you will need to pay the cashier. (Do not give them this money yet!)
The cashier will follow the steps below:
1. You will need to find the TOTAL cost of the items by adding them together. Write the amount in the blank next to the words AMOUNT TOTAL.
2. Subtract the TOTAL from the AMOUNT PAID to find out how much change you will need to give back to the customer.
3. Using the bills and coins, count out the change that you will need to give back to the customer (Do not give them this money yet!)
4. Ask the shopper/ customer for their money. Count the money and make sure it matches the AMOUNT PAID.
5. Give the customer their change back.
The customer will follow the step below:
1. Make sure the cashier gave you the correct amount of change back. Count your change.
The next shopping list you do the same as you did for the Wally's Market List! Don't forget whoever has the customer first is now the cashier first!!
