Students should have a clear understanding of the themes and symbols in the book. As the students read each chapter, they should have discussions in class about the these themes and symbols. By discussing the chapters in class, they can talk about things they didn't understand and they can discuss their opinions of the events. The teacher should be guiding their understanding with each chapter.
