Getting Started

Introduction

  • This webquest is where you will find all the information you need to make an A in Technology. Please refer back to it throughout the semester if you forget any of the rules or expectations.
  • If you want your polaroid picture on the bulletin board outside, bring me $1 for your photo. You may keep the photo when we change boards.
  • If you want to be on the KRAM video news team, ask me for a sign up sheet. Deadline is Monday, January 11th.
  • If you are late to class and do not bring an excuse from your previous teacher, you will be marked tardy. 2 tardies = parent notification. 3 tardies = detention.
  • I let everyone choose their seats today. You may continue to sit there as long as you can follow the rules. If you cannot, I will move you to a seat by yourself
  • Some of you were in my class last semester. When we do projects that we did last semester, I will vary yours so that you won't be doing the same thing twice. You may need to serve as helpers for the students who are new to our class. Thank you for that! :)

HOMEROOM:

  • You must come straight in and sit at your seat
  • You may WHISPER to your neighbor WHILE you work
  • Do NOT ask to go to the bathroom or to visit other teachers.
  • Do NOT wander around the room
  • When it is time to do the pledge, EVERYONE will stand up straight and respectfully, put your hand over your heart, and say the pledge correctly. This is to respect the men and women who have fought and died for our country so that you have the freedom and privilege to be in school today to prepare for a future that many other countries do not allow their children to have. Respect that privilege.
  • You may ONLY go to the following sites while you are waiting for 1st period to start:
  1. https://www.typingclub.com/
  2. https://www.typing.com/
  3. http://www.freetypinggame.net/
  4. http://www.typingtest.com/games.html
  5. https://www.nitrotype.com/
  6. Reading Plus/Math
  7. Work on your weekly project

Classes: When you come in, the first 10 minutes of every class period will be spend on typing practice. I will tell you when the time is up. You can choose your favorite typing site out of the following websites:

  1. https://www.typingclub.com/
  2. https://www.typing.com/
  3. http://www.freetypinggame.net/
  4. https://www.nitrotype.com/
  5. http://www.typingtest.com/games.html

I will be giving out monthly $$$ prizes for fastest typist in each class as well as most improved, so work hard!

Projects:

  • New projects start on Mondays
  • There will be a project grade every Friday. This will be a test grade.
  • Sometimes projects will take 2-3 weeks, but you will be graded at the end of each week based on your progress up to that point
  • Most of our projects are done online, so you can work on them at home or the library as well. All you need is to pull up the webquest on the internet, so make sure you write down the web address.
  • EVERYONE NEEDS A FLASH DRIVE by January 8th. They are just $5 at Walmart.

Email Addresses and passwords:

  • Everyone will have an email address that belongs to the classroom, but has your name in it
  • When you sign up for sites that we'll be using for our projects, your email address will be: summitsuperstars+firstnamelastname@gmail.com (example: summitsuperstars+rebekahlewis@gmail.com)
  • For EVERY project that we do, your password will be Student1
  • If you choose another password or email address and forget or lose it, you will have a zero on that project or you will have to redo it on your own time

Other grades:

  • You will have daily participation grades
  • You will be graded on your 10 minute typing time...you won't be graded on how fast you are, but that you are practicing and improving
  • You will receive an A if you do your work to the best of your ability and follow the directions of each assignment
  • You will receive a zero if you choose to do anything other than the assignment to the best of your ability

Academic Expectations:

  • At the beginning of each project, you will be given a webquest just like this one which details exactly what I expect of you in order for you to make an A on the assignment
  • Each day when you come in the classroom, after your ten minute typing practice, you will open up your webquest, review where you are in the project and what still needs to be done
  • You will begin or continue working on your project where you left off the day before
  • There will be no extra days given to complete assignments unless you are sick and you bring a note from your doctor or parent
  • You must read each of the directions to make sure that you have the assignment correctly done
  • When your project is completed, and you have CHECKED EVERY direction in the webquest, you will have free time until the end of the project (Friday). The earlier you finish, the more free time you have! :) You MUST show me that you are done before your free time begins
  • Free time consists of the websites on Board 2

Behavioral Expectations:

  • I expect everyone to be in their own seats at all times unless they have permission from me to get up
  • Most students do not disprespect their bathroom privileges, but some students last semester used that time to disrupt other classrooms and wander around the school causing problems for adminstration and other teachers. That will not happen in this class.
  • If you are respectful of the rules, you will be allowed to use the bathroom, but you will be timed. There will be no traveling about the school. If you are caught anywhere other than the bathroom, you will lose your bathroom privileges for the year and you will have to have an adult escort in the case of an emergency.
  • If you used the bathroom in the class prior to mine, do not ask to go again during my class.
  • I do not expect silence...I feel like you are young adults and can handle talking at a low level. This may be the one class you are allowed to talk, however, there are some rules regarding this:
  1. You may only talk softly, in a whisper. If I can hear you, you are too loud.
  2. You may only talk to the person directly to your right or left side.
  3. You may only talk WHILE if you are working on your project at the same time.
  4. You may only talk to another person if they are working too.
  5. In other words, you may not stop working and have a conversation, but you may talk while you work. This is what adults do at work; I feel like you can handle this privilege, as well.
  6. You may not talk to or call other people from across the room or anyone other than the people right next to you.
  7. If you do not follow these directions, I will warn you once. If you disrespect these rules a second time in one class, I will turn off your computer and you will receive a zero for the day and you will have to catch up with what you missed the next day or at home.

Cell phones:

  • Your cell phone must be in your backpack at all times-not your pocket, not your chair, and not on your desk
  • Sometimes we have a project where you can use your cell phone. I will let you know when these times are
  • If I see your cell phone, I will take it and call your parent to come pick it up at the end of the day. THIS IS YOUR ONLY WARNING.

Websites:

  • When you are doing your projects or have free time, you may use any of the sites on Board 2. There are over 30 sites that are fun and educational. They are musical, editing, gaming, and all kinds of other interesting technology. Try each of them out to find your favorites.
  • You may NOT go to YOUTUBE, AGARIO, MINECRAFT, FACEBOOK, INSTAGRAM, SNAPCHAT, or ROBLOX or ANY other site that is not on Board 2. If you go to ANY of these sites, I will turn off your computer immediately. This is your only warning.
  • If you finish an assignment early, and you have a website you'd like me to check out to potentially add to Board 2, just show it to me and I'll check it out
  • If you are on a website other than the assignment or Board 2, I will turn off your computer and you will receive a zero for the day and you will have to catch up with what you missed the next day or at home.

Go to the Process page to find out what your project assignment is.

Go to the Evaluation page to find out how you will be graded.

Task

Read the directions on the process page.

Process

No matter which Course you take, it must be completed in 2 weeks: Friday, January 15th. You can also work on these at home or the library or anywhere that has the internet. Please share with your family...even your sisters and brothers may enjoy these activities. Parents, too!

First things first:

If you are new to my class, you will be doing Course 2 on Code.org.

https://studio.code.org/s/course2

If you were in my class last semester, you will be doing Course 3 on Code.org. If you didn't finish Course 2, you may go back and finish.

https://studio.code.org/s/course3

If you find that Course 2 is too difficult to start with, you may try Course 1; however, I feel that is way too simple for most of you.

To get an A: ALL CIRCLES MUST BE GREEN WITH A WHITE CHECK White checkmark

REMEMBER:

  • The key to doing well and learning code is to THINK.
  • Sometimes you may not get it right away.
  • Read the directions.
  • REREAD the directions.
  • Try one thing; if it doesn't work, try another.
  • Just like a puzzle, if a piece doesn't work one way, turn it and try it another way. Or try it in a different spot. Or put it aside and try something else and come back to it. You may have to do the same process with this.
  • You are all growing up and must begin to use your cognitive (thinking) skills in life.
  • You will have problems that arise in school and at home, and sometimes you will have to use problem-solving methods to figure out solutions.
  • It is the same with code.org.
  • They are meant to be challenging but doable for students your age level, but when you learn and succeed, you will feel good about yourself.
  • Don't just try, fail, and quit.
  • Try, try, and try, and the success will mean so much more because you figured out how to do something 75% of the population of our country does not know how to do...that is, to code video games and technological design.

Evaluation

Here is how you will be graded for your project.

  • Remember, if you fall behind, you can work on them at home or the library. Just go to code.org and login.
