Georgia's Heros

Introduction

he·roˈhirō/noun1a person, typically a man, who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities.Your news team has been hired by Briarlake News First to report on Georgia's Heroes. There have been many heroes who were involved in the creation and safety of our state. Your quest is to select one of our Georgia Heroes:  James Oglethrope, Tomochichi, Mary Musgrove (founding Georgia), Sequoyah (development of the Cherokee Alphabet), Jackie Robinson (sports), or Martin Luther King, Jr. (civil rights),  Jimmy Carter (leadership and human rights). Your news report must include how their everday life is similar to and different from present day, including topics such as: food, clothing, homes, trasportation, communication, recreation, rights, and freedoms.

Task

Together, we can inform the general public about the contributions of our Georgia Heroes. Working in news groups of 4, you will research the contributions made by one of these historic figures.  You must answer the following:

1.  Who is your Georiga Hero, where and when were they born?

2.  What food did they eat?

3.  What type of clothing did they wear?

4.  Describe their shelter and transportation.

5.  What did they do for recreation?

6.  What were their rights and freedoms?

7. Did your Hero demonstrate positive character traits such as: honesty, compassion, trustworthiness, and dependability? Give examples.

Task 1

After answering the questions, your group will create a flyer or brochure that will be posted in the Chambers of Congress and rest stops throughout Georgia.  Each flyer or brochure must include a picture of your Hero and must also describe their contributions to our state of Georgia.  You must include the answers to the questions on the flyer or brochure. Tourists will use this information to learn about our great state.  Be creative.

Task 2

Each group member will write a news or magazine article. You must include 3 of the following:

  • Identify specific locations signifcant to the life and times of your Hero on a map of Georgia.
  • Describe how this place had an impact on the life of your Hero.
  • Describe how the historic figure adapted to and was influenced by his/her environment.
  • Trace examples of travel and movement of your Hero and his/her ideas over time.
  • Describe how the region in which your Hero lived affected their lives and compare this region to where you live today.
