Garden Designing

Introduction

Glades Garden Project

Process

Phase 1:

  • Know your client:

  • Create a Scale Drawing of the site:
    • Getting your measurements
      • measure the following areas
        • fenced in area
        • gate both open and closed
      • Measure the different planters/ rocks/ fountains
        • you will need to have the length, width, height (depth) measurements
    • Answer the following questions:
      • Wind
        • What is the prevailing wind direction in summer?
        • What is the prevailing wind direction in winter?
      • Existing Landscape materials (plants and structures):
        • Describe location and condition of existing trees and shrubs (what type, how many)
        • Describe location and condition of existing flower and/or vegetable gardens.
        • Describe location and condition of existing structures in the area

Create the scale plan

  • Tools
    • ruler
    • pencil
    • graph paper

  •  Watch: the following video to understand how to create a scale drawling plan

What is a scale drawing -

http://www.virtualnerd.com/middle-math/ratios-proportions-percent/scale…

  • Use your math skils to calculate the periment of the garden area.
  • Use your math skills to calculate the area of the garden area.

  • On your graph paper, using a straight edge and a pencil, draw the outline of the garden.
    • on the upper left corner indicate where north is and box it in
    • on the upper right hand side indicate the scale you are going to use

  • Determine the scale that you are going to use: Here are some suggestions: 1:5 1:8, 1:10, 1:16 and 1:20.  A 1:16 scale means that 1 inch on your plan equals 16 feet in real life.

  • Place the gate in its correct location and include the dimensions

  • Place the landscape bed with all of its plant material (trees- location and correct number and Peace pole (location). Watch the video to know how to draw trees on your map (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XkKBs0vkxYA)
