Fractions Most Wanted Poster

Introduction

Your Daily Life.

On the circle paper provided, you must create a time frame of your day on a typical Friday from the time you wake up to the time you goes to sleep.

Introduction to Fractions

A fraction is part of a whole. It's less than 1 whole thing, but more than 0. We use fractions all the time in real life. Have you ever  bought half a cookie? Or noticed that your cup of juice is half full? Both of these are fractions of the whole amount—a whole cookie, or a full cup of juice.

Fractions look a little like division expressions, but they aren't problems to be solved. They are a way of expressing an amount. Like numbers, fractions tell you how much you have of something.

Fractions are expressed as one number over another number, like this:

The number on the top is called the numerator and the number on the bottom is called the denominator.

Suppose a cake is cut evenly into the number of pieces in the DENOMINATOR. If the number of pieces YOU get is the NUMERATOR, the fraction of the cake you get is:

Adding and taking away (subtracting) fractions can be pictured using slices of cake. For example:

Here's another way to look at fractions. Imagine that each of these lines is a board and you want to cut it into halves, thirds, fourths, sixths, and fifths. Here is what those board fractions look like:

one whole board!!
1/2 board 1/2 board
1/4 board 1/4 board 1/4 board 1/4 board
1/3 board 1/3 board 1/3 board
1/6 board 1/6 board 1/6 board 1/6 board 1/6 board 1/6 board
1/5 board 1/5 board 1/5 board 1/5 board 1/5 board

Task

Create a “Most Wanted” poster for two fractions.

Using models, show equivalent fractions, represent fractions, compare fractions.

Process

Step 1

  1. Choose a birth month and the fraction next to it. This will be your first fraction.

  1. Now select one of the following fractions to be your second fraction. Make sure the fraction you choose has a different denominator than your first fraction. Also, make sure the two fractions add up to more than one whole. You may not choose a fraction whose denominators are the same.

Requirements

1. Title!

Have you seen these Fractions? WANTED! $10,000 Reward! Extremely Dangerous!

2./3. Fraction Suspects Written with Numbers and Words!

3/4 (three-fourths) and 2/5 (two-fifths)

4. Fraction Mug Shots!

Two pictures of each fraction: one using a number line, one using fractions strips.

5. Fraction Aliases!

Three equivalent fractions to each suspect

6. Fraction Friends (known to be close to the suspects)!

List two fractions a little less than each suspect and two fractions a little more than each suspect. All of the fractions must have different denominators than the original fraction.

7. Fraction Families!

Find the LCD for the two fractions. Both fractions are members of the family with the denominator that you find. Using your family names, state who is the older, bigger brother and who is the little, younger sister. Draw a mug shot for each fraction using its family name (use fraction strips). Finally, list at least three other family members with the same denominator.

8. A Dangerous Combination!

If you should see these two suspects together they may look like this…Add the two fractions and give the answer as both a mixed number in simplest form and an improper fraction.

9.  Polished look.  Your poster MUST be eye-catching, uncluttered and easy to read.  Please use a large sheet of paper for your final copy (ask your teacher).  It is your choice whether you use colour or keep it as grayscale as long as it looks visually appealing.
