Fractions

Task

Your task is to compare fractions, make equivalent fractions and switch between improper fractions and mixed numbers

Process

Comparing Fractions - You can compare fractions in several ways - a) if the denominators are the same, compare the numerators b)if the numerators are the same, compare the denomonators c) compare the fraction to a landmark fraction d)compare the missing piece

Equivalent Fractions - Multiply or divide both the numerator and the denominator by the same number (a form of 1 in fractional form)

Improper Fractions to Mixed Numbers - Divide the numerator by the denominator, put the remainder over the original denominator, combine to make your mixed number

Mixed Number to Improper Fraction - Multiply the whole number by the denominator, add the numerator to that number, place this number over the original denominator

Evaluation

Which is bigger:

7/8 or 5/6                    4/10 or 1/2               1/4 or 1/8           3/10 or 8/10

Find an equivalent fraction for:

52/60                     3/5                    4/7                   9/81

Make this mixed number into an improper fraction:   3  1/7

Make this improper fraction into a mixed number:    23/4

Conclusion

In fifth grade we are going to learn how to add fractions, subtract fractions, multiply fractions and divide fractions.

Before we do, it is important that you understand how to compare fractions, simplify fractions, find equivalent fractions and know how to make improper fractions into mixed numbers and mixed numbers into improper fractions.

This can be a challenging unit for a lot of kids. Stay on top of your homework and I am here to help you if you get stuck!     Ms. Stevenson
