Introduction
A flower, sometimes known as a bloom or blossom, is the reproductive structure found in flowering plants(plants of the division Magnoliophyta, also called angiosperms)In addition to facilitating the reproduction of flowering plants, flowers have long been admired and used by humans to beautify their environment, and also as objects of romance, ritual, religion, medicine and as a source of food.

"Deep in thier roots, all flowers keep the light."

What are the female and male parts of a flower?
The male parts of the flower are called the stamens and are made up of the anther at the top and the stalk or filament that supports the anther. The female elements are collectively called the pistil. The top of the pistil is called the stigma, which is a sticky surface receptive to pollen.
What is the female part of a flower called?
The "male" or pollen-bearing part is called the stamen, and is composed of the filament and the anther. The "female" or seed-bearingpart is called the pistil, and is composed of the ovary, the stigma, and the style.
What is the carpel of a flower?
The pistil is the collective term for the carpel(s). Each carpel includes an ovary (where the ovules are produced; ovules are the female reproductive cells, the eggs), a style (a tube on top of the ovary), and a stigma (which receives the pollen during fertilization).
The Carpel
A carpel is the innermost part of a flower. It is usually surrounded by male reproductive structures calledstamens, both of which are surrounded by petals. The petals of flowers are often large and brightly colored. Before the flower opens, the petals are protected by sepals, which are usually green.

A flower can have one or more carpels. If there are many carpels, they can be separate or fused together. Together, all the carpels are called a gynoecium, or a pistil. A carpel is made up of three structures:
- Stigma
- Style
- Ovary
Where is the pollen located on a flower?
Stamen: The pollen producing part of a flower, usually with a slender filament supporting the anther. Anther: The part of the stamen wherepollen is produced. Pistil: The ovule producing part of a flower. The ovary often supports a long style, topped by a stigma.
Evaluation
Students will illustrate the parts of the flower and write it's functions.(20pts)
If you are unsure of any answers, use the flower anatomy website as mentioned on the last page.

Conclusion
Well Done!
Flower have an important place in our nature. Flowers offer more to the planet than merely natural artwork and beauty. They are essential to removing carbon dioxide and toxins in the air. They feed the honeybee population that’s responsible for promulgating food crops. To most people however, flowers carry enormous symbolism, provide soothing sympathy and are an integral part of many of life’s ceremonies
