Ferris Wheel Fun

Introduction

This investigation plan was designed for Geometry Honors students. The purpose of this investigation is that you, the students, understand circles’ arcs, chords, volume, area, circumference, surface area, and everything that can be studied from a circle in a geometrical point of view. With this, you will understand, through real problem exercises, how to solve questions of this matter. Along the way you will find right triangles problems as well.

A Ferris Wheel will be used as the point of investigation of this matter.

Task

Your task, as a Geometry student, will get into small groups of 2 or 3 minium (decided by your teacher) and work together, in groups to help solve these real world problems. You will be dealing with  circles’ arcs, chords, volume, area, circumference, surface area, and even right triangles. We created a sketch of a Ferris Wheel creating problems from Geometry units.Try to figure out how we can use our model and relate it to real world problems.

Process
  1. Get in groups of 3 people (or four)

  2. Brainstorm ideas that involve problems using real world objects

  3. Come together and choose the best idea from your group

  4. Come up with an Introduction, Task, Process, Rubric, Conclusion, and Credits

  5. Start brainstorming some questions that goes with your idea

  6. Divide each part of project to each person in the group

  7. Draw and sketch your model, and base it off on how you would want it to look

  8. Come up with questions that apply to your model

  9. Think of some units that you’ve learned from Geometry that you can apply to your model (Right triangles, Circumference, and etc.)

  10. Organize and present model

Evaluation

Conclusion

From this you will get a better practice in calculating area, diameter of a circle, trig, finding arcs using surface area and volume, calculating circumference. We created a model and explained how you can apply Geometry to anything and everything even Ferris Wheels. The knowledge that you get from this problem will help you in the future with any jobs or even problems you may have around your house.

Credits

The reason why put together this real world problem dealing with Ferris Wheel is to help you, as students, to get better practice in solving and dealing with circles, arcs, diameter, surface area, right triangles, circumference and volume. Our interest in this project is to help individuals get better practice in solving these type of problems that they may face in the future.
