Introduction

Congratulations future teachers of Palmetto Senior High School! You hav been chosen to design an activity that promotes the physical and sensory development for school age students (5-8 year old). This will be a tremendous opportunity for you and your peers to create an interactive web quest /lesson that will introduce and demonstrate how children connect sensory body parts with the name of senses which will allow them to understand that our senses help us to get information about our world.
Task
The theme for the week is The Five Senses. You and your peers will be expected to observe a kindergarten classroom environment, explore various web sites for theme related resources, and demonstrate to students how they function. In order for the student to fully understand and grasp the information that will be taught it will take three days to teach (Monday-Day1, Wednesday-Day2 and Friday-Day 3).
Day I (Sight & Hearing)
Kindergarteners will be allowed to watch the following Five Senses Song to introduce the lesson:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MtwV9Mi_aNk
After viewing of the video teacher will investigate through questioning to gather students prior knowledge as you and your peers observe (which sense do we use to when we eat ice-cream?)
In small groups you will assist kindergarteners with magnifier to observe and encourage them to express and describe how the objects appear before and after the use of the magnifier.
CD with different types of sounds will be played to for students to listen and identify the sound as they hear it in a large group setting. At the end of the lesson ask students to explain what sound they heard and write the information to review with students. Review appearance of object before and after the use of the magnifier with students.
Day 2 (Taste & Smell)
Kindergarteners will be focusing on the sense of taste and smell. You all will provide assistance while they prepare for a small group tasting activity. Observe as they become engaged and express their tasting experience.Encourage kindergarteners to connect with their peers when taking turn to smell scented jars and describing the items they smell. These are exciting activities that will allow you to explore investigate materials to create your own ideas.
Day 3 (Touch)
You will be given ten minutes to explore the web for resources that will allow you to formulate an activity for touching. Place different types of objects in a in a bag (sponge, sand paper etc).Explain the activity to students then take turn to blind fold them individually. Assist while they put their hand in the bag, remove one item, feel it then guess what it is and describe how it feels. When all the kindergartener gets a turn, allow them to trade their item among themselves and critique.

Then assess student’s knowledge with a matching sense work sheet.
Process

You and your peers are required to review and analyze Monday’s Lesson Plans then explore the Web for songs/poems that are related to this week’s theme (The Five Senses) to activate student’s prior knowledge and build their curiosity.
This them will be spread over a period of 3 day Monday, Wednesday and Friday. That will be enough time for students to absorb the information taught.
On Monday (Eyes & Ears): You and Kindergarteners will observe as teacher introduce the lesson with appropriate song then explain t that there are five senses pointing to eyes and saying “My two eyes help me to see, this is my sense of sight”. Point to ears and say “My two ears help me to hear, I hear the school bell ringing”. You and your peer will be given an opportunity to model the other senses with the kindergarteners. Arrange students in small groups of six and observe them as they look at various type of items displayed with magnifier. Investigate through questioning how their objects appear before and after using the magnifiers.
In a large group setting the teacher will play a CD for students to identify the sounds and have the students take turns identifying what they hear (lawn mower, trucks etc). At the end of Monday’s lesson you and your peers will review the sense with the class by applying some of the strategies used.
Wednesday (Nose & Mouth): You and your peer will need to collaborate and create a game that will be use to teach the sense of hearing and tasting to kindergarteners. Teacher will prepare scented jars for kindergarteners to use in small groups, you all will interact with students and encourage them to describe the sent that they smell (yummy, bad, nice, etc).
In small group for tasting the kindergarteners will be given different types of food to taste, it will be you and your peer’s responsibility to assess student’s knowledge by asking them to describe the different types they experienced, Reinforce communication among their peers and using descriptive words (sweet, salty, sour).
Friday (Hands): You and your peers will be giving 10 minutes to plan and teach a mini lesson on the sense of touch. You will be allowed to web resources books and manipulative. Teacher will explain game and the invite kindergarteners to participate. This game will require students to identify /describe items they feel in a bag when blind folded. Items that are soft hard, smooth, bumpy will be place in the bag for students to touch. After the game you and your peers will be given an opportunity to teach you mini lesson to kindergarteners. You and your peer will be asses for the following:
- Activating students prior knowledge to build their curiosity about the lesson/topic
- Identify major ideas presented in lesson
- Require and encourage students to respond using full sentences and descriptive words.
- Reinforce positive behavior
- Review the week’s lesson and assess student’s knowledge appropriately.

Conclusion

There are many different alternatives that could be used to help children connect the sensory body parts with the name of their senses, it’s difficult to imagine what our word would be like if we were not equipped with such amazing sensory body parts. This web quest was design to educate high school student on how to teach and promote sensory development to school- age students. In this case a kindergarten class.
This is an effective way to help them investigate, apply concepts/strategies and collaborate. I am confident that have that experience will prepare them for internship. The five senses is an engaging and interactive theme is very entertaining for school age a student which makes it more enjoyable for the high school students. Hope that they will find it rewarding and will be able to incorporate some of it in their Early Childhood Classroom in the near future.
Best wishes to you Palmetto Senior High School students!

This WebQuest is intended to teach 9th thru 12th grade students how to review lesson plans , exploer the web for resource and ceate activities for ‘School Age Students’ (ages 5-8). The My Five Senses theme will give the High School Students an opportunity to work and interact with a kindergarten class, assist and teaching them how to connect sensory body parts with the name of the five senses.
