Endangered Animals 6Blue

Introduction

Welcome!

Across the globe, specifically in Australia and Sumatra many animals and plants are endangered. Hundreds of animal species face the threat of extinction. It is estimated that 16,000-17,000 animals are currently endangered and on the edge of extinction. Some of these animals are well known and others are not.

We need your help to investigate this further! You have been selected to be a researcher in training.

Task

Your Task

The Tarong Zoo needs your help in its efforts to save endangered species from Australian and Sumatra. After your visit to the zoo you have become an Endangered Species Specialist (ESS). You and your partner will investigate a selection of endangered animals from your visit (and some you did not see) to complete your booklet and report to the Taronga Zoo Conservation Committee to bring more awareness about the situation of these animals in the world.

You and your partner will investigate the complex issue of endangered species. You and your partner will research the following questions:

  • Why do animals become endangered and extinct?
  • What role do humans play in causing the decline of species?
  • Should people take action to protect and rebuild populations of animals?
  • Are there different viewpoints surrounding this issue?
  • What conservation efforts are in place to save animals?
  • What innovative ideas do you have for preserving the biodiversity of our planet?

Process

Process

With your partner you will research each animal from your zoo booklet. Use the useful links and what you saw at the zoo to help you understand that animal and factors effecting their survival.

Remember to use your zoo booklet to write down your answers.

Find your endangered species and explore the sites given.

Read through the information and take notes. Remember to read the headings to help you find the information you need.

The main questions you are aiming to answer are:

Causes of Endangerment: What is threatening the species? Identify the reasons that these species are endangered. Why are these species being threatened? How are human actions affecting these species?

How can we help: What can you do to help keep these creatures alive and protect them? Think about ways that you can help the environment locally and globally. What can the local government of that species change to save them?

Evaluation

Evaluation

You will be evaluated on the following:
  • Your level of cooperation and participation in this project.
  • The quality of information gathered for your booklet.
  • The neatness and completeness of your research information.
  • Spelling and complete sentences within your information.

Conclusion

Conclusion

During your webquest, you have learned much about an endangered animal.  There is much more that we can learn about the status of animals and the human connection to them. How can you use the information gathered in your webquest to educate the public about endangered animals?

Write a response to the question in your writing journal and be prepared to share.
