Elaboration theory (Charles Reigeluth) created by sawas george ascona

Introduction

  • Elaboration theory is an instruction design theory that argues that content to be learned should be organized from simple to complex order, while providing meaning content in which subsequent idea can be integrated.
  • It provides a macro prescriptive framework for selecting sequencing, synthesizing and summarizing the content.

Reigeluth (1979) indicated that the elaboration theory deals primarily with macro strategies for organizing instruction

Process

HISTORY OF ELABORATION THEORY

  • Elaboration theory drew heavily upon cognitive research on instruction available at a time, in a particular the work of Brunner, Ausubel and Norman.
  • Reigeluth has defined the theory offering detail procedures for planning, design of conceptual, procedural and theoretical instruction.
  • The theory has been on the best received theoritic innovation in instructional design and is heavily preferred to use by practitioners and researchers.

ORIGINATOR OF THE THEORY

The originator of the theory is Charles Reigeluth (Indian university) and his colleagues in the late 1970.

THE KEY TERMS

Conceptual elaboration sequence, theoretical elaboration sequence and simplifying conditions sequence.

 PRINCIPLES OF THE THEORY.

1.Instrution should be organized   in increasing order of complexity for optimal learning. Reigeluth (1979), used the analogy of zoom lens to explain the nature of elaborative where by a person starts with a wide angle view which allows one to see the major of the picture and the relationships among those parts, example “zooming in at one level on given part of the picture allows the person to see the major subpart”.

2. The learner needs to develop a meaningful context into which subsequent ideas and skills can be assimilated.

3. Sequencing strategies may be topical or spiral.

IMPLICATION OF THE ELABORATION THEORY.

1. Detailed guidance for designing holistic sequences for several kinds of course content.

2. It allows learners to make many scope and sequence decision on their own during the learning process.

3. It facilitate rapid prototyping in the instruction development process.

4. It integrates variable approaches to scope and sequence into coherent design theory.

Conclusion

HOW THE THEORY IS INTEGRATED WITH ICT.

1. ICT help to prepare the content in Microsoft word sequentially.

2. The teacher can use Microsoft power point to arrange the content well and teach the lesson by arranging the content in point form in a good order.

3. The use of ICT will help the students to be interested with the lesson so as to become very      deep in the subject concerned.
