Down Syndrome WebQuest

In this activity, you will learn about the supports, best instructional practices, and resources available to help those students with Down Syndrome succeed in school.

You will explore the website of the Canadian Down Syndrome Society to learn about how to support those students with Down Syndrome and learn about the various resources available to families and educators.

Click on TASK and you can start the webquest there!

Using the website www.cdss.ca, you will answer a series of questions to learn more about the supports available for those children with Down Syndrome.

Visit the website www.cdss.ca - this is the website for the Canadian Down Syndrome Society, an organization that provides information, resources and supports for individuals who have Down Syndrome and families with children who have Down Syndrome.

On the left hand side of the screen, click on Down Syndrome - this will take you to a general information page.

Your first step is to find the header Canadian Down Syndrome Society Brochures; click Brochures in order to take you to the next page.

Click on the Celebrate Being brochure (it will open up in PDF) and answer the following questions:

1. Complete the following table, providing two facts from the information for each category heading.

Next, click on the Your Child With Down Syndrome brochure (it will open up in PDF) and answer the following questions:

2. What is the rate of Down Syndrome in newborn babies? ______________________

3. What can increase the change of a child born with Down Syndrome?  ____________

Next, go back to the Home Page of the CDSS.  From there, click on Information in the top red toolbar and then click on the General Parent Information link.  Scroll down to the Teaching Children with Down Syndrome brochure (it will open up in PDF) and answer the following questions:

4. What are factors that can influence a student’s educational success?  For each, be sure to list one way that they can affect learning.

5. How can you support students with Down Syndrome with each type of challenge or difficulty?  List two ideas for each difficulty.

Now, go back to the General Parent Information page; scroll down and do the Transition Planning of Students with Down Syndrome brochure (it will open up in PDF) and answer the following questions:

6. What are the different factors that you have to consider when transition planning for students with Down Syndrome?  Come up with two to three different factors to consider.

7. For each of the PLANS, what is one way we can help students to successfully transition?
