Introduction
Task
Students will learn about Sue Hendrickson, the palentologist who discovered the most complete fossil of the dinosuar Tyrannosaurus Rex. Students will observe a palentologist working in the field. They will apply what they observe to their own science activity. The students will be required to find a dinosaur and classify it by its characteristics. Students will also have to write about their experience and share during class discussion. This lesson addresses National Science Standards 2PS1-3,RI2.1,W.2.8,and RI.2.3.
Process
- Students will view the introduction video video:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KPFbNGK_a6s showing them pictures of the Tyrannosaurus Rex fossil.
- They will learn about the palentologist (Sue Hendrickson) who discovered it.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ago4F2E_5Y0
- Students will watch a video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3CCpQ695QBI to see what tools and effort it takes for a palentologist to extract a fossil from rock.
- Students will then be randomly put into four groups.
- They will recieve lab safety instructions.
- Students will be given materials (gloves, paintbrushes, crayons, spoons, paper plate, a data collecting worksheet). They will also be given a container filled with sand and plastic dinosaurs.
- Students will be instructed to extract a dinosaur from the sand using the paintbrush and spoon.
- Once students extract a dinosaur, they will then be asked to fill out the data collecting worksheet.
- Students will then be asked to write about their experience as a fossil hunter and circle all of the nouns and highlight the punctuation marks.

Conclusion
By the end of this lesson, students will be able to demonstrate the importance of asking and answering questions during a scientific event. Students will be able to demonstrate how to collect data and use it to classify an object. Students will be able to write a narrative of their experience and identify nouns and punctuation.
