Did Propaganda Influence Citizens During World War I

Introduction

During World War I Empires were concerned about harnessing support for the war. You will explore a variety of ways  that propganda was used to garner support within Allied and Central Countries. You are a taking a world tour during this time period and acting as a detective to "uncover" evidence of propaganda forms - Letters, Newspapers, Posters, Film, and Artwork that contributed to each countries Nationalistic fervor for war.

The historical questions to be answered are:

  1. Is there evidence that propganda worked to influence people?
  2. Is there evidence that a certain propaganda technique/form worked better?
  3. How did propaganda pit one side against the other?
  4. What types of symbolism or images were used to get citizens to suppor their country.
  5. How did Nationalism shape the propaganda that was put forth to the public?

Task

In the end, you, as detective on this "world tour," will be able to report on whether  propaganda had the intended influence on citizens of Allied and Central countries. Your job as the detective is to make a 5 Slide PowerPoint report showing how propaganda was used during World War I and assessing the validity in the recruitment and morale of countries involved in the war.

Process

As the detective you will analyze four propaganda posters from each of the following countries: Britain, United States, Germany, and Russia. Take your detective notes on how the posters are trying to influence citizens - Consider images, symbols, language, and color.
