Culture Webquest

Introduction

Music and dancing is major part in the lives of Hispanic people.  You are going to study about different kinds of music and dances as expressions of their cultures.

Task

For this assignment, you will work with a partner.  You and your partner will choose which music style and dance to study.  At the end of the process, you and your partner will present your study to the class as a Power Point Presentation.  Your group will research the origin of the music and dance and it's place in the culture today.  You will describe the music and the dance, whether it has changed or remained close to the original, and provide examples.  You must also include performers from then and now.

Process

WEEK 1:

Research online one of the following musical/dancing styles: flamenco, bolero, fandango, jota, sardana, sevillanas, zarzuela, salsa, merengue, bachata, tango, mambo, conga, rumba, paso doble, bomba, plena, reggaeton, cumbia, cueca, chicano, tejano, mariachi, etc.

If you prefer, you may choose a particular Spanish-speaking country and research its music and dance and then choose a specific one to study in depth.

Watch videos of the dance and listen to the music.  Take notes on the style. Also, note the clothing worn by the musicians and dancers.

WEEK 2:

Make your Power Point Presentation.  Include the origin of the music and dance  with examples.  Explain its place in the culture today.   What is its role in the lives of the people?   How does it impact the culture?  Describe the music and the dance.  Explain whether it has changed and how or if it has remained close to the original.  Provide examples to compare performances from then and now.  What is your opinion of the music/dance?  Is it like anything you have ever heard/seen before?  If so, what?  What impact has it had upon you?  How does it make you feel when you listen to it or watch the dancing?  Will you listen to this music?  Would you like to learn to dance to it?
