Introduction

Journey of the Islands of Music History

Welcome to Port Musicana!! We begin our here to successfully navigate through the dangerous Brienite Islands. We must make ports of call to only the Islands of Music History in correct sequence and avoid the deadly islands of dissonance. Only when the tasks are successfully completed will we be able to make our journey and safely arrive back on the mainland.

Task

In order to successfully complete the Journey, students will:

-Research the years of each of the following musical periods (islands) and arrange them chronologically:

         20th Century, Baroque, Classical, Renaissance, Romantic 

-Identify significant composers from each period with biographical information

-Produce an accurate map of the Islands of Music History, from west to east.

1. Research each music period and include the folowing information in your presentation:

          - Time frame

          - Style characteristics

          - Significant instrument usage

2. Research the following composers and decifer which each music period and include biographical and stylistic information in your presentation:

          - Ludwig von Beethoven

          - J.S. Bach

          - Antonio Vivaldi

          - John Cage

          - Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

          - Franz Joseph Haydn

Excellent work navigating your way home!! It is time to rest from our journey and reflect on what we saw and experienced. Think of these questions and comment in your journal:

- How was the life of a composer different in each music period?

- How has music changed over time? Instruments, styles, compositional techniques, etc.

- What does today's music take from music of the past?

- How do you see music evolving in the future?
