Community Resources

Introduction

Introduction

Your great aunt Mila, a very wealthy woman, passed away after a long illness and short stay in hospice. To everyone’s surprise, she generously gifted $50,000 to all of her grand nieces and nephews (all of them are in this class!!)… with one condition: the money must help your community!! The money must be given to a community resource, eg. a charity or a non-profit organization (NPO) in your neighbourhood. The nieces and nephews now have to persuade the rest of the family at a family meeting to donate the money to their choice of community resource.

Your group needs to choose a community resource in your neighbourhood (or town) that you would like to support. You will have to create a very convincing presentation to make sure the family chooses to donate money to your community resource.

Process

The first two steps must be done individually before you work with your partner.

1. Define the following words:

  • Community Resource
  • Charity / Registered Charity
  • Non-profit Organization

2. Fill out the handout to help you choose an area of interest. Check the three issues below that mean the most to you.

  • Animal Welfare

  • Bullying and Intolerance

  • Education

  • Environment

  • Health & Wellness

  • Homelessness & Poverty

  • Hunger

  • Literacy

  • Senior Citizens

3. Select a community resource/an organization that you can count on to use your gift wisely. Use these links as help - Resource list Resource List2 and Community resources.

Or choose one that you are already familiar with.

4. Be sure to take a close look at each charity’s website.

  • What is their mission?

  • What are their goals and accomplishments?

  • Are they similar to your idea of making a difference?

Fill out handout "Community Service Organization Research Sheet"

5. Make a presentation about your charity or non-profit organization. Your presentation must include 3 areas:

  • A Movie Trailer (iMovie) to capture your audience's interest.
  • Everything you learned! Use the above as a guide line. It is up to you to dig deep and find out as much as you can about your organization. How do you want to present it? - Slideshow? Poster? Video? Documentary? News program?
  • A persuasive writing piece (every member of the group will complete one). Time will be given in class.
