Communicable Diseases

Introduction

What is a Communicable disease?  It is a disease that can be transferred from one person to another, or from animals to people.

The transfer usually happens via airborne viruses or bacteria, but can also be transmitted through bodily fluids and blood.

The main diseases our research will focus on are,

Q fever,

School sores,

And hand foot and mouth disease.

These are all diseases that can affect you, your family, your friends, and your fellow classmates, and we need to learn how to identify these disease and know what treatments are available for someone who might have them.

Today's Task - For this task you are medical students who have visited a local Doctors clinic and you noticed that there were no information pamphlets for patients to read about diseases and other medical problems. You have decided to create a few for the clinic to give to their patients.

Task

Medical students today you will create informative pamphlets for your local Doctors clinic to give to their patients.  They must include information about the disease, its signs and symptoms, what treatment options are available, if people can be immunized against it, and how it can be prevented.

Your pamphlets must be, set out clearly with headings, contain pictures of the diseases, and be visually appealing.

You choose one disease from the list below, and start discussing it with a fellow medical student.

-Q fever,

-School sores,

-Or Hand foot and mouths disease.

Find out what your fellow medical students knows, by asking the following questions.

Have you heard of …?

What do you already know about…?

Now you are reading to start researching.

Process

Step 1-You are still working with your fellow medical student, now you will have to gather correct and up-to-date information on the disease you have chosen to make the pamphlet on.

Below are a few questions that will help you get the right information to add to your pamphlet, as well as a list of resources, just copy and paste the links into your web browser.

Describe briefly what…is? What are the signs and symptoms of…? How is it transmitted? What treatment opinions are available? Are there any long term side effects? Can you be immunised against this disease? Does this disease have an incubation period? If someone a school caught this disease would they be allowed to attend? How long would they have to stay at home for? How can you protect yourself from this disease? Prevention

Step 2-You have gathered all the information you will require, now you need to made it into a pamphlet.

Things you will need to include,

-Brief description of the disease

-Signs and symptoms

-Treatment options

-Long term side effects

-Incubation and exclusions periods

-Most importantly how to prevent the transmission of this disease.

Step 3-You and your fellow medical student will present your pamphlet as you would to the head Doctor of your local clinic, explaining what information is included and why it is important for them to include such pamphlets in their clinic.
